I had this splinter of a stave layin around so...
There's nothing like a skinny little osage "D" bow, fast, and fun to shoot. This bow is 54" tip to tip, 1 1/8" wide to midlimb tapered to 1/4" tips. I'm still lookin for a better handle area if anyone has any ideas. I used a modified Ferret floppy rest, and stained the limbs with leather dye.

Dano--That bow just fits you! What did you build that handle up with? Take care--Coach
-
Nice tiller ! What is the handle wrap made from  Nice looking bow !
-
Looks great Dano! Still amazes me how short you can get that osage, and still get a fairly long draw out of it.
-
OOOOOO! I like that one! can I have it also?
Thats a sweet little bow Dano. I love the simple "D" bows. They are very effective weapons! Pat
-
Thanks guys, Coach, that is just stacked leather. I used contact cement for the layers, and wraped it with some textured leather I bought on ****.
Clint, you know it, I had thought about going shorter, but that would have been a waste of the rest of the stave.
Pat, I DON"T THINK SO!! :bigsmyl:
Yep a simple bow for a simple archer.
-
very nice looking Dano. What is the draw on it?
-
Thanks Sal, it's 45#@26", thought about going shorter, but it shoots so nice I called it done.
-
looks like a sweet shooter, Oneday I'll try a Osage Stave. Hopefully it will look just as nice as Your's.
-
Nice lookin' bow Dano! Is that a built-in string keeper? I've never seen that done before. Cool.
Bill
-
Thanks Bill, yep I usually drill a hole in the upper tip to hang the bow for finish, so it made use of the hole.
-
Nice bow, I will give that string keeper idea a go as well...Glenn...
-
love those bendy handle bows
-
Neat little bow Dano.I LIKE the string keeper idea.
Glad to see your staying busy and enjoying retirement.Ray/mamba
-
Really nice, my friend - and just my weight/draw (Forget that "too" stuff, Pat!) LOL
Those "Automatic" string keepers of Dano's work real neat - I can vouch for that I got a couple of them in use - LOL (Oooops, I guess I can forget this one too, Pat. ;) )
I just won a bendy handle Osage in a draw and I need to build up the belly side of the handle for my palm also. I was thinking of some kind of real closed-cell foam (dense) so it could still bend (like some tool handles) - but don't know where/how to find any. I guess the leather and contact cement build-up would work, now that you mention it. Mine is a Flatbow and the handle is just a Tad wide to be comfortable.(I don't know much about Bend through the Handle bows - yet) Will it change anything if I shave/sand a little off each side (edge) of the handle?
-
Bernie, If its a true bend through the handle the tiller will change if you shave the sides. You might look at it on your tiller tree and see if it can stand to bend more in that area.
-
I was afraid of that. I will do that, Dano. I need to look at it again anyway, as they had the draw weight labled wrong on it (fresh writing), with the brace height way high, and too short a string to even get a lower brace height. I made a little longer string (and have exercised it some) so need to check it out now, and will pay attention to that area as well. One previous owner had put a beaver tail wrap on the handle (which I like) but perhaps when I take that off, I'll leave it off, and it will narrow the width just enough, especially with the belly side of the handle built out into my palm a little with the leather strips and contact cement (just one thin strip there now). Thanks, bud.

Sweet bow Dano!!
-
Dano, in regards to the handlematerial. Today in a second hand store i found a pair of (toy) shoulder pads, that only the shoulders were plastic on and the rest of the coverings were closed-cell foam like I spoke of. I had thought about safety gear for skateboarders, etc. and that's what i was checking for. It looks like I should be able to cut progressivly smaller ovals of the aprox. 1/8" foam and put them together with contact cement or Barge Glue, if it doesn't eat the foam up - LOL. You might want to think about looking for something like that. I'll let you know how mine comes out.
-
Thanks Shane, ready for them big Misseri whitetail yet?
Thanks Bernie, I'll look for some, I used to see that stuff all the time at work (packing material), we'd just throw it out, I may have to start dumster divin. :bigsmyl: Never too late huh?
-
Hey Dano!
Nice look'n little bow there ! What's that funny look'n tree you got that bow leaning against? I don't reckon I've ever seen one like that around here?
Oh,,thats right, you retired and headed for a warmer place didn't you! Ain't you gonna miss our unpredictable winter weather here in the mid-west? 50 degrees one day and -15 degrees the next.
I've always enjoyed veiwing your work Dano, keep it up and enjoy your retirement!
-
Well Hi there Rich, how ya doin!!!
They call this stuff cactis, it grows everywhere like weeds. :bigsmyl:
I don't miss the weather much, I do miss the countryside and all the great people. Thanks bud.
-
Looks good Dano!
-
Thanks Ron.
-
A thing of beauty is a joy forever. Nice!
-
Oh that is a good one! Jawge
-
Thanks Bob and Jawge.
-
Dano, that's a great lokin bow, man you are crankin then out! It seems retirement suits you!
I will have to shoot you a pic of my latest project!
-
Yep Steve, retirement is worth workin for :bigsmyl: Please do shoot me a picture.
-
Dano, I see from your profile you are a cigar smoker, other than the obvious I knew I liked you!
Steve
-
And I never met a cop I din't like, well there was this one time. :bigsmyl:
-
I heard that you promised you wouldn't talk about that time, Dano ;)
BTW I made a three piece (tiered) pad out of the closed cell foam for my bendy handle Osage and wrapped it with the stuff they use on golf club and tennis racket handles. As well as replacing the floppy rest with one of "Your" (now "our" :D ) layered leather rests (a small one for that thin, flat edge). It is much more comfortable to shoot now but still shoots quite well. I'll get a pic or two and maybe show ya - if yer a good kid :p .
-
Dang, I forgot. I was young what can I say.
-
Nice job Dano......it made me put a couple of arrows through one of my selfbows I haven't shot in a couple of years....thanks.
As for liking cops, well, I think we're all likeable..... :bigsmyl:
David
-
Your darn right David!!!
-
You probably weren't a good kid but I'll show you anyway. First a picture of how it was when I got it. Floppy rest (rather long and curved) and wrapped with beaver tail (I liked that), still very flat and uncomfortable to shoot - but nice:
Here is after I took the Beaver tail, hard thin leather slab in palm, and Floppy Rest off and afixed the three piece, tiered foam on the belly of the handle, a layered leather rest, and wrapped with sport handle wrap. One pic shows side and rest better, the other shows the foam to protect the palm but without hampering the bendy feature of the handle:

-
Much better, I have been lookin for some of that foam.
You know tho, the longer I shoot this bow with no rest (off the knuckle) I kinda like it, course I have'nt been bit by the fletching yet
-
Yep, I know what you mean. I like to do that once in awhile too - until a fletching end that isn't sealed good "gets me" - Ouch!
-
Thats the great thing about fletching tape and Duco or fletch tite for the dot on the end, makes for a pretty smooth arra.
-
Bernie,
There is a very dense closed cell foam that whitewater kayakers use to custom fit their boats. If you live near a paddleshop you can probably find it there.
Steve
-
Wow, Steve, thanks, There is a salt water kayak shop just down the highway from me a ways, and I go by it often. Never though of that - and I used to own a regular type of kayak too. Say, that makes me think of another source also - in the second hand shops, you often see wet suit parts for next to nothing. I've used/advised the arms and legs for kids/beginners armguards often. Should work for this (and other) padding also. Being in arid Nevada now, Dano, if you don't find some soon, I could send ya some with no problem, I bet. Just say the word, ol' fren.
