hello all, i'm very new to bow hunting, and have only started using a second hand hoyt compound, for practice.
i usually hunt with a rifle and wanted to get 'back to basics'.
a take down recurve bow was what i originally had in mind, as i would prefer the instinctive style of shooting,and the compactability. but i was worried that i would be under powered for the very tough tahr that live in the southern alps of new zealand.
anything you can recomend? the das dalaa gets pretty good reviews, hoyt gamemaster maybe... also what draw weight? the compound i use is 70lb, and i can draw that a hundred or so times before i'm completely stuffed. was thinking 55-60lbs?
what would YOU get for a thousand bucks?

if you are spending that kind of money you had better know that is the exact bow you want, drawing and shooting a compound is nothing like a recurve, what are tahr, like a long haired sheep? if they are tougher than moose or elk than you need be woried about 50-55 but otherwise thats fine. I would buy a blacktail, shrew with bowbolt, or a psr widow. all around 58lbs,

a recurve in the 55 to 60 lb range i plenty of weapon for tahr.
since you have no experience with recurves, however..I would recommend starting sensibly, with a good quality USED bow to get going, and determine what you LIKE and DON'T LIKE about it, so you can select the custom bow you may like later.
Personally, I don't think I will ever buy a new bow very often again, because there are so many good quality used bows out there to be had for a decent savings less than new.
There are trad guys in NZ and Australia..get to know them and get their input as well...there are Aussie bowhunting websites also...get their input.
Good luck in your quest...a tahr is one of the most beautiful game animals I've ever seen and in their habitat? A worthy quarry, a difficult quarry to get the better of for sure...I'd love to hunt them that's for sure.

Like Ray said, a used bow would probably be the best choice.
I know that Jim from NZAP in Nelson had some used trad bows when I was last there.
But you could also just have a look into the classifieds here; lots of great bows there, with nice prices too.
My second reccomendation would be to join the New Zealand bowhunters society!http://www.nzbowhunters.co.nz/
Great people, lots of advice and more and more of them are going trad.
Been a member for 4 years now and it's getting better and better.
I'm sure Honehe-jeff or maybe John54 might have some good kiwi-advice too. :campfire:

thanks, been keep'n an eye out on trademe for a second hand one(thats where i got the compound).
i don't have enough time on my hands to go rattling off around the country trying out bows, but i will give nzap a call + one or two others, and try my luck.

hey randomblunt a 45-50 pound bow will do just fine as i use a 45 pound longbow on fallow no problem. :thumbsup:
