Post by: Lin Rhea on May 18, 2016, 09:27:00 AM
I'm making a few of these for the up coming Blade Show. Thought you might want to see the pictures.

Here are two others that show the forging and the knife after the tail is brought around and fastened. You'll notice that there is some filing done in the curved areas to true up the shape before the heat treat but most of it is forged in. I plan on teaching a class on these type knives in the Spring of 2017 at NESM.

Thanks Lin for all the pictures.  That last picture puts it all together for me.  Do you file the stud, drill the attachment hole, and then pen it together?  How big was the piece of steel you used on these two in the last picture?  Final question...what proportion of the bar stock do you start the handle (guessing 50% for handle to draw out & 50% for blade)  I'm going to try one of these this week.  You are my inspiration! Jeff

Jeff, Out of a 5 inch piece of 1/4 X 1 bar I step 2-1/4 inch down into the handle tail. The rest is the ricasso and blade. Message me before you get started and I will cover some details for you that might help. I'm not keeping secrets here on TG. I just want to cover the main points and wait for questions if anyone has one.
