Title: Trapper's Knife
Post by: KSCATTRAPR on December 27, 2014, 08:19:00 PM
My Christmas break started last Friday and I'm off till the 2nd so I have had a little time to set out a small trap line for cats and coyotes. While on the line I found myself constantly using a knife to cut up various objects. Driving home from setting traps one afternoon I got to thinking, I have a knife for everything else I do so I might as well have a trapping knife too. The wheels started turning almost instantly.

I wanted a knife that was stout enough to chop small branches but also be able to handle the smaller duties like cutting up string or slicing feathers off a duck wing. I use a scalpel for skinning so I wasn't looking to make a skinny blade, just a good old working knife I could use.

I had an old file sitting around that I had hammered out a few years ago and I thought this would be the perfect knife to use it on. I chose the buffalo skinner type blade just for something different and that blade style just looks like a good trapping knife. This knife is 8" overall and has a 4 1/8" blade. The handle is from an old elk antler I found this year in Colorado on an elk hunt, I stained it with some leather dye. I really like the way the handle and blade turned out and so far this knife has been a great carry and been able to handle everything I have thrown at it.
