Title: Need Advice On Bowbuilding Books and Videos
Post by: Deer Slayer on February 02, 2008, 04:58:00 AM
I would like to know what books and/or videos you guys could recommend on getting started on building laminated AND selfbows. I've never done either and really have no clue where to start, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance to any and all recommendations!

Mark

You can learn quite a bit by going to the "how to" sections of the Trad Gang, Primitive Archer and PaleoPlanet. Better info with pictures than you can find in any of the books and videos out there.

Here is an example of a tutorial on English longbow making. Sam did a great job  on his tutorial and has several others on the net.

I bought the "Traditional Bowyers Bible" series they are stacked full of good practical information on how to build self bows and recurved limb wood etc. I highly recommend them.
As for DVD/videos. I recently bought "shooting the baboo Bow" by Dean torgus. A great DVD on how he makes bows. The title is missleading it's not about shooting but about building.

Mark, "Hunting the Osage Bow" by Dean Torges is great for selfbows. "Hunting the Bamboo Backed Bow" video is great for Bamboo backed bows, and very inspiring to get you going. At least borrow these and look at them they are both great. For laminated glass and wood bows Binghams is a good solid starting point. Also as mentioned the "buildalong and how to" threads here.A warning, its almost too much fun and can be addictive.  Bob

Thanks fellas! Will look into all of the above and see where it takes me.

Bob, yeah I am finding that there isn't any aspect of Trad Archery that IS NOT addicting! It just gets into your blood and takes over.  :goldtooth:

Mark, I would like to get "hunting the Osage Bow" by Torges. (thanks for the spelling correction) Where could I get that? I just got a nice piece of osage and that DVD sounds like the one I need.
