Title: help with handlewood
Post by: Hummer3T on March 29, 2014, 04:31:00 PM
I'm building a knife for my daughter, she would like a pink or purple handle or both, what are good woods in this colour.  I checked out purple heart but at $78.00 is there other options.

Maybe it's a Canadian thing, but a small enough amount of purple heart shouldn't cost that much, at all. I picked some up at Woodcraft (big specialty wood working chain) and didn't pay anywhere near that much for a block 2"x2"x12". Of course, that was a little while ago, but I can't imagine it going up so much in that time.

If you do some web searches for it, you can likely find it on the auction site, as well as some specialty wood suppliers. Do you have a preference between wood or synthetic? You could go for pink G10, Micarta, or the dyed woods-maybe check some of huge knife supplier's websites. If all else fails you, give me a holler and maybe we can get you some of the purple heart I have. Would hate to have your daughter go without a super cool knife for lack of scale material     .

here is one I did with pink micarta for a friends wife.  Added white liners and mosaic pins and it turned out pretty decent.  Just another option and micarta is almost bomb proof.

I made this bow for my daughter out of pink ivory, ebony and a purpleheart stripe. Might not be as pink as you would like though.

Thanks everyone, I went to the big city -Saskatoon) today.  for most of you I expect you would call it a town.  Anyways found a great deal at a woodworking business on purple heart, $4 for two scales, I bought more than needed -far cry from $75 for same amount. So I guess it will be purple heart.
