Well, today I am going over to Mike Brooks' to start work on my first bow. I will have info and hope to get some pics to post here, as we go. Mike has done the Glue up for us on my first one (and his jillionth). I just wanted to say here, thank God for folks like Mike and you guys here who are willing to help newbies (even "old newbies") get their feet wet. bless you all, bless us all. Who'd a thunk it? - a ol' hoss like me (attempting) to make his own laminated wood bow ... and then ... perhaps ... on to a special selfbow, or somthin' - If Mike don't get "gusdusted" wit me n' shoot me fust - ;)
-
mentoring a new interested bowyer is as much fun as making your first bow,,, have fun and be the wood!
-
you go Bernie !!
-
Bernie, I would Imagine that Your Heart will be Invested into that Bow, Just like Everything you do Sir!!
It ought to be One Heck of a Bow!! :archer: GOOD LUCK!! :goldtooth: To BOTH of You!!

Photos, please!

Bernie th' Bowyer...does have a nice ring to it.Go get 'em,Bern!
-
Well, Bernie and I had a good day in the shop today. Had it nice and warm in the shop before he got here since he dislikes the cold even more than I do and we made some good progress. I'll let Bernie fill in the details but I did notice him eyeballing my bandsaw a couple of times I told him he had more wood to take off with the block plane or rasp! :help:
-
Guess you'll be looking for a new home for that ACS, eh? :bigsmyl:
Killdeer~ever optimistic!
-
Killdeer I was thinking the same thing.Good Luck Bernie,I know it will be something to see!
-
good luck and have fun bernie! can't wait to see what you come up with!
gino
-
Bernie the name Crooked Stik is already taken. LOL Go get em, I know you'll do us proud!
-
Careful Bern, It's really addictive. You'll loose sleep wanting to get back out to the shop and work on the bow. Pics please! Good luck on all the future fun and heartaches. CK
-
Bless all of your hearts. I will be back later this evening or in the morning to post pics and tell tall tales. Taking them up to Photo bucket in minutes (had to take a couple more here at home first). Which of all those thingies, with all those teeth, in your shop was a saw for bands, Mike, and is that music bands, or rubber bands? I'm just a beginner, ya know.
Un-eyeball my ACS, Killie (and others) - "Nebba hoppen, GI!!!"
-
My husband says that looking is OK, Bernie, and my hands are firmly clasped behind my back in true window-shopper style. ;)
But a gal can dream! :biglaugh:
Keep your fingers outta the bandsaw!

Trying my best - I can hurt myself enough with the handtools - right, Mike? LOL.
First picture is My bow Glue up from Mike. The one in the vice - the one on the wall is his and he had got a little ahead of me this week, so he could help me today. Either he or i will tell you more about his after he finishes it - I took another pic of it but it didn't show up what I wanted it to. Mine is Hickory Backed Beefwood , with Brazillian Cherrywood riser, and Bloodwood nock overlays (I hope I got that all right - I forgot to write it down). It is 67 1/2" and we are shooting for 45# at about 27".
Next are a couple showing markings of centerline and bow layout lines (chalkline for centerline):

Here I am in the process of taking the limbs and riser sides to the layout lines with a blockplane. Well, that and driving splinters into my fingers and blockplaning my finger - untill I got my methods smoothed out (Mike did that with a fungo bat to the back of my head ;) )
Then it was time to shape the handle some and cut in the window and shelf. Mostly files (and a hacksaw and coping saw for the window):

It was time to take a first look at a first longstring tiller. Mike had already showed me a couple floor tillers and we checked that out some. He said the first longstring on the Tillering Tree looks pretty good for this early on. He also showed me where the top (right) limb is a little faster but says that may not turn out to be all that bad. We'll see how it goes.
The end for this day (after driving back to Mikes to retrieve my camera - that I had left at his shop - so I could post these pics tonight) was my "Homework assignment" - glueing the Bloodwood Nock Overlays on the limb tips - piece 'a cake - LOL. "Rose, come get my sweatshirt unglued from this clamp, will you, pu-leese?"

Wondering if Texas Slim, will influence the grip?
:wavey:
You have more fun than a barrel of monkeys :archer:
We'll be watching...
-
Lookin good Bern. More ways to make wood chips than throwin hawks and knives huh? :bigsmyl:
-
Way to go Bernie! I like the shop glove on you left hand, a mix of Mad Max and Michael Jackson. I bet that ACS stays in your possesion, just gets a little less work out. There is something special about how an arrow flies from a bow you make yourself.
-
It may at that, Mac. Mike gave me some pointers and then had me griping it and filing for comfort with my grip - and I certainly like both "Texas Slim" and "Someone Special's" grips. It's feeling pretty good so far, I think. A lot of finish work between now and "done" though - LOL
That means a lot, Crooked Stic, it really does. Yeah, I flat put some shavings and wood dust all over Mike's clean shop. Thanks to you too, Shaun, I know it is going to be a thrill for me. In case it didn't come across in last night's late post - I really am pleased (and thankful) with/for the progress, looks, and things learned so far. Mike's a good teacher and shope-mate.
-
Yep!! I think ol Bern looks more like Mad Max, not enough hair for Mikey Jackson :bigsmyl:
Nice work older Brother, bows made with hand tools are not for the weak minded huh?
-
Be careful Burnie, I got so excited about building bows that I had to have a heart valve put in to keep up with the excitment!! LOL.
I know you will have a great time with your new toy. Enjoy!!
Chort
-
I love the bow and the experience already and you guys just make it all the better.
-
bernie, you no as soon as kathy hears that you are a bow builder she will have you do a bow bilding storie for her news letter. by the way your bow looks good. and i will tell her you will have her a storie for the spring news letter.
-
HA-ha That would be OK, Lonnie. I'll try to see if I can do one up - a little shorter winded than I usually am ;) . BTW was the annual form for the newsletter and renewal left out of the recent mailing by accident - or was it just left out of mine - :D ?
While I have some members attention, please let me take a moment to tell you that in the very near future (within days I hope) I will be upgrading my system to WinXP. Just in case things run awry  (as they sometimes do) you will know what is up if I am off line for awhile :( . Thanks. Hopefully I'll be back in jig time, and in better shape, computerwise :D .
-
Win XP safely compleated tonight - so far, so good. Didn't get much rest from me, did you? :D
-
Bernie,Bernie,Bernie, Don't you know by now after watching so many get suduced. BUILDING BOWS IS ADDICTIVE !!! Well by now your already ruined and you might as well give in and admitt the adiction. LOL
I couldn't be more happy for ya Bernie. Just a word of caution, when you get to that stage finishing that first self bow you might as well give up your car keys, cause you'll be looking at every tree that is along the road.
look forward to seeing more pics, Its looking great so far. Keenan
-
Lookin good Bernie.Ya keep this up and you'll be wondering where all your spare time went.
-
The Dino Man is a life time member. NO DUES its the least we can do for all you do for us.
-
Bless your heart Lonnie - and all the other fine members - I love doing it for TBSWV, ATAR and The Kids, and wish I could do more.
Good info and kind words Keenan, and from a man/bowyer who knows from personal experience - and also from you, Linc, ol' friend.
-
OK - got my puter updated(to XP), and pretty well squared away, so back to the fun of my first bow. Did a little work at home that Mike and I had discussed I could do, if I wanted to try to fly solo a bit - I did; After gluing the nock overlays on they of corse are sticking over the sides. I decided to use a Block Plane to take them down and that is what I'll show now. I also rounded the limbs some more with the plane, and shaped the handle further with a 4 in hand file.
The first pic is a little fuzzy (got to close) but shows one edge of the Bloodwood sticking out beyond the limb tip edge:
The next one shows one side planed down:
The last one shows both sides planed down and rounded a little. Are we having fun? You betcha bippy! No feathering-in is attempted yet:
-
Next step? More boring shaping (that I find relaxing and somehow therapeautic) - :archer:
-
Since we were talking about "Feathering in" the Overlays I thought I'd show my initial progress with that before I go back to Mike's today for a little tillering and more directions. This progress was made with plane, file , and sanding - you can also perhaps see I've begun to round the Hickory edges now. I think it went pretty well for firsties - LOL.
No sun yet so I took one pic with no light (close-ups) and the second with the overhead light on - explains the color difference, 2nd is pretty true. Those faint marks you see below the Overlays are pencil placement marks - I (now) remember my shop teach saying, "If you put pencil marks on wood where they can be seen, they may still be seen after a lot of trying to get rid of them." Oh sure, NOW I remember!

nice job Bernie! real nice...but man, wear a do-dag er sumethin'...the glare from that flash on yer dome is hurtin' my retinas! ;) :goldtooth: :biglaugh:
I'm gettin' the itch to try a glue up myself, maybe after turkey season. They are calling for the hottest driest summer on record this year; might be a good time to try one!
Keep it up!
BD
-
Man, I can't wait until this one is done. It's getting me fired up to try one.
-
Getting close, folks, we accomplished a lot yesterday (and it looks done, except for final checks, more sanding, and finishing - after I "shoot it in" for awhile first). I'm fixing to upload pics now and I'll be back later this AM to post them.
-
Here we go - I never expected to accomplish so much progress today, and I certainly never expected to get to the very desirable point of shooting my first self-made lam bow this soon - Now I'm really pumped - LOL.
First, after looking over my progress at home (and being quite complimentary, I might add), Mike showed me an idea he had for shaping his tips, on one of mine - and I lliked the looks of it. (I have some finish work to do there still.)
After scrapping a little more bulk off the sides of the riser, re-rounding edge, shaping other tip, and cutting nock string grooves - we took our first morning tiller look:
Looking good but upper limb (right one) seems to move a little stiff now, so needs some scraping:
Yep, that's a K-Bar "scraper" - what else would a retired Marine use ? - LOL. Actually it belongs to "The Corpsman" and is Mike's Favorite scrapper. I like it too - gotta replace the one I gave away to an old hunting buddy!
More in next post -
-
hey Bernie! is that a "dino stic" selfbow you have there? it sure is lookin' good whatever you call it. :archer: and' you sure look like you're having fun.
-
LOL - It just dawned on me last night that I don't have a name for it yet - perhaps it will come during the shoot-in period.
Another Tiller look, and my bow is now looking very symetrical, and both Mike and I are very pleased:
Then, much to my shock, it's time to shoot/exercise the bow. I found out pretty quick it needs quite a cant (with me shooting anyway) but that it is quite quik (surprised us both), quiet, and smooth:
I also found the scraping I'd done on the riser left a corner that was biting into my thumb base - I also found (from the pics) that I was using pertty consistent form (they are separate pictures) - gee think I'll lift that Full Draw pic for my pages :
Time to take the bite back out of that handle and make it sweet shooting:
More in next post -

Close up of Picking the Cherry(wood):
We shot some more and found it very nice to shoot, all around (I even let Mike shoot a couple'a arras ). Then back for one last look at the tiller, after pretty good exercising of the bow:
Final look for today and it's now 44# @ 27" (I'll loose about a pound or two in Final sanding and shaping, Mike says):
Hopefully next pics will be "window dressing" - and/or a couple of "shooting in" pics perhaps. Hope you are still liking it as much as I am. Thanks for looking.
-
Buddy I have to say I enjoyed this one!!! very nice!!!!!!Now Im pumped !!!! :)
-
Bernie how cool is that? Great looking job, wlecome to the world of making arrows fly from a bow you created....be careful though, it can be an addicting thing..... :archer: :clapper:
David
-
She looks great Bernie, I am happy for ya. Mike dun good teachin ya.
-
Y'all did a Fine Job!! Do you have a "Thumb Shelf" on your Handle Bernie? I am Stuck with a High Wrist :( , and was considering "Trying" the Shelf as a Positive Locator for my Grip.
Your Bow Looks Great!! Thanks for the Pics and the Updates, and Thanks to Mike, Yer "Partner in Crime"!! It REALLY makes me want to Tear into My Dryad Glue-Up! BUT.... , I dont have ALL the Tools I need just yet, so Patience is Killin' Me!! :goldtooth:
-
I appreciate the comments, guys. I agree, Dano. Mike is a very knowlegeable bowyer of wood bows and is able to impart it to those who wish to listen. BTW Mike's Grandfather taught him and then he added to it with reading and doing later in his life - and still is. His help meant a great deal to me - his friendship means even more. I mean, how many Marines have their own attendant Corpsman for their old age - :biglaugh:
-
Kinda helps having a Corpsman around when your working with sharp tools too,huh Bern. :bigsmyl:
-
:biglaugh: That too, Dano!
-
Mike Brooks sent me this pic with the "plotted tiller" on it this afternoon and, since it interested me, i thought some other folks might like to eyeball it too:
-
Yep, looks like it's time to think about finish. Right limb is the upper limb, right?? I vote for Tru-oil for a finish.
-
I was thinking Tru-oil, Dano (I like it) but I may defer to Mike's advice on this one. He told me he likes to use a Poly finish on Hickory, to make sure it doesn't suck up moisture. He likes and uses Tru-oil a lot too. Yes, Right is Upper.
I served my string today and put string nock points on - also did a little more shaping (on tips and handle) and sanding. I'll keep working on that as I shoot it in, to be ready for finish. Trying not to get overanxious but i am dying to see those colors and grain under finish - LOL.
-
Can't argue with Mike's advice, I forgot about the hickory backing. Take your time, we are the overanxious ones. ;)
-
Yeah, I think the Beefwood (and cherry and blood woods) would look great with just about any kind of "oil" finish - Tru-oil, Tung Oil, or even waxes like parrafin finish, etc. - but then whuddaino? LOL
-
A little update. Last weekend Mike and his wife were under the weather. They weren't feeling well and I try to steer clear of cold/flu germs when I can, so we didn't get to do the final tiller check and shaping. I did do a little more "safe" sanding during the week. We are set to do it this weekend, if all goes well. Then (hopefully) I'll be able to start applying the finish coats during next week - pictures at ....... :D
-
Go get em' Bernie!
I'm right behind you about 2 or 3 weeks. I'm studying hard and setting up my shop right now. I can't wait to get started myself! i'm going to try my luck solo on my first one. :scared: I've built spiral staircases out of teak. How hard can it be????? With my luck my first bow will come out with a 150 lb draw weight :bigsmyl: Lets hope not.....It should be a great adventure in craftsmanship.....I have the utmost respect for you bowyers out there....Right up there with building a violin guys! Good luck to you Bernie. i hope you enjoy the experience....
-
Can't wait for thefinals.Lookin good though.
-
I really am enjoying it, thanks. Unfortunately, my friend Mike is under the weather this weekend too. A day after we talked his "Junkie Stuff" Jumpped back on him and he's down for the count again. At least his wife has shaken hers. I don't rally think my bow is in need of much else, before applying finish, but with it being my first I'd rather wait and let Mike take a look-see. I'll just stroke it some more - course Mike tells me if I don't quit stokin' it, I'll have it down to a 20 ponder - :D
-
Mike is finally on the mend (Bronchitis - docs say a lot of it around here has been going into pneumonia). I was able today to not only introduce friend Adam to trad shooting but also to Mike and a little about Bow building. Adam goes overseas at the end of the month - but now he is pumped - LOL - and you can bet he'll be back for more as soon as he returns.
Mike and I final tiller checked my bow today and all is, not only well, but great. Mike was very pleased with the work I've done on it also. We both shot it as well.
Tonight I put the first coat of finish on "Ol' HB" - YAHOO!!! Should be ready for compleated pictures later in the week, if all goes well.
Oooops- i guess maybe the end of next week, or the week after - I just read the drying time on the Poly.
-
Good going Bernie. :notworthy: Can't wait to see the finished bow.
-
This AM, I was really pleased how just the first coat has deepend the darker woods and brought out the lighter Hickory. As good friend Dano told me, the results are going to make it worth the wait between coats, if I will be patient - and I promised him I wouldn't shoot the messenger - :D
-
Very nice,,, got that finish on yet? Sure looks like fun!
-
Want a sneak preview? Just the first coat - unsanded? OK you twisted my arm :D . Give me a few mins, or so.
-
Sorry about highlights (not sanded).

-
Looking good Bernie. You gonna have it ready to shoot on the 18th? Don
-
Probably not ready to shoot (3days between coats)but I should be able to bring it for "show n' tell" at least, Don - :jumper:
-
hey bernie this has been a real good post i enjoyed it and boy you are real good at that bow making. i hope you make some more it looks like fun. anyway i had fun looking at it.i hope to get to try that some day to.
-
Thank you Jeff. I owe it mostly to Mike and following directions/instructions from him. It sure has been a ball. After I finish this one, I will start on another one. It is addictive, for sure. Just wish I'd started sooner.
-
You da man, Bernie!
What an inspiration you are! What are you gonna learn next?
Killdeer~still willing to hold your other bow for ya! :bigsmyl:
-
he may just learn wig making next killy LOL!!!! :goldtooth:
-
Naw - I'm like you, Jeff - all I really have to do is let it grow - :D
Gee, I don't really know Killie but I do know I honestly believe any day that you don't learn at least some little thing - you've wasted the day. (I know you do too).
Oh, you know what I learned today??? I learned that my next Great Grandchild will be a boy - You heard it first here! (not that I wasn't satisfied with the girls - but it will help me and Camo Dog even up a little - :goldtooth: )
-
CONGRATS BERNIE  :notworthy: :notworthy:
Now You Have, or Will Have TWO NEW BABIES!!! :goldtooth:
-
Thanks, Shakes. His Mother (Onesty) and her Mother (my daughter, Lois) are sure happy they are finally gonna get a boy in the family. (I think - hope - Onesty is gonna quit now - :D )
-

-
Congrats, Bernie! Guess you won't be needin the Adcock anymore, with you bein an accomplished bowyer and all!
Hope you bring the new bow to B'More if you go.
Love to see it in action on the courses!
Lee :bigsmyl:
-
I hope to bring it, and shoot it some. Around the course might be rough as I would have to carry the ACS too, or have a "bowdy gaurd" to keep an eye on Killie ;)
-
Congrats, Bernie and Rose (and especially Onesty!). Life just keeps getting sweeter! Here is a prayer for all things to go smoothly and that your newest great grandchild be strong and healthy. I hope you get to teach him all manner of things!
There is still an estrogenial majority, though, so you'll haveta keep putting the seat back down. :p

congrats bernie now you will have to make another bow LOL!!!! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :campfire:
-
Congrats on the bow and baby bernie. Thanks for lettin us look over your shoulder. :clapper:
-
Thanx, fxe. Tonight I get to sand the first coat (finally), write on it a little, and start on sucessive coats - Yippee!
-
All right-eeee then, gonna show y'all the final pics (if you care to see them, after all this).
To recap - it is my first, and a Hickory Backed Massarandruba (Beefwood, Bulletwood) lb, with Brazilian Cherrywood handle, and Bloodwood tip overlays. It's name is "Ol' HB". I am still trying to decide whether to apply a leather, or wrapped cord, handle wrap on it (so I guess it isn't really finished ;) ). I cut and applied a Sealskin rug, and used a Bear arrow pass pad. It is 67" ntn, 40# @ 27" and a sweet, smooth shooter. I finished it with a number of coats of MinWax Polyurethane in Satin (for less glare) and a final coat of Johnson's paste wax. I haven't really learned the best way/place to get pics of the bow, so forgive the cut off ends (I need to be a little taller, or set a milk crate on the picnic table to climb up on too - :D ):

-
Great job Bernie. I'm looking forward to building my first longbow this summer. You've given me inspiration.
-
Thanks, Ray, Glenn, and Bill. It really was fun and I love learning new stuff. To inspire others is a real nice thing to hear.

Thank you all. Yep, I really owe a lot to Mike - he's a good bowyer and a good friend. He and I have been talking about "next" and discussed a couple or three things but I haven't made a final decision yet - soon though.
"Betcha can't eat (do) just one!" :goldtooth:

Thanks, Woody and Kenny, for the nice comments.
I tried to work with metal once, VTm, and it interacted with my fillings - ouch! Oh, that's right, I don't have those kind of teeth anymore - LOL.
-
Very nice looking bow Bernie. Bet it shots as sweet as it looks! With talent like yours you should build a 'curve next. How many coats of finish did you apply?

Thank you so very much, FM, DG, and tpoof.
-
bernie- one fine bow you built there..... those nocks you cut look perfect!
-
Thank you - a lot of guidance from Mike there, shapeshifter, but we both were very pleased with the way they came out.
-
Who made your glueups?
-
Also my friend, fellow military (Navy Corpsman w/FMF)retiree, and fellow archery club member, Mike Brooks. He ordered the woods out of AL, as I recall, and made a little different glue up for both me and him.
-
Bernie ya done good.<>< :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:

LOL - Still getting it tuned in on right arrows and all the little things, Lee. Killie beat you for dibs on my ACS - but no worry, it ain't happening anyway. I will have the new one with me at B'more, and will shoot it some, even if not for full courses. I took it to a club meeting tonight and I have to say that it was pretty well received (and that's an understatement).

The glue ups came out of Arkansas, not Alabama. They are the work of Lindell Beene who I have ordered quite a few of these from and I highly recommend if anybody in interested in making a solid and fairly inexpensive bow. The woods he uses are beautiful and he is very helpful should you need it.

As usual, I misunderstood (and/or mis-remembered - :D ) what Mike told me about the glue ups. At the time I was more interested in what Mike was trying to teach my addled brain about making the wood into a bow, than where the wood (he so generously supplied) came from. In retrospect I do recall Arkansas, vice Alabama as well as Lindell Beene's name, which Mike also told (again) to Adam, just the other day when we were over there for Adam's intro to this art, before leaving for Iraq. It just didn't sink in the second time either  . Third time is a charm, snapper1d, I can be a slow learner sometimes :knothead:
-
"making the wood into a bow" I thought the bow was already in the wood we just have to remove all the non-bow pieces of the wood. Either way you done good!!
-
Your right, madness. I just haven't quite reached that desireable state of ability yet - :)

Adding this on here since it is finishing up of the same bow. I read Iktomiwicasa's Teutorial (on a primitive forum) re Cord Wrapping of handles. I liked what I read and saw and decided to try it on "Ol HB". Did it last night and put the finish coat on this AM (early) I have the pictures taken now and was about to post them but PhotoBucket is having trouble with some portions right now - and mine is among those parts - :( . I will post them as soon as possible. The cord I used (not sure what it is - I bought a large spool of it at a yard sale) is a good, strong , a little stiff, type of cord. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome, both in looks and feel. One thing I varied on, was I didn't use my same bow finish (Satin Polyurethane) as the final coating of the wrap. Instead I used Tru-oil (I like it) both for speed and a contrast of glossy look and feel of the handle (wrap). Hope to be able to post the pics soon.

Just shake'n the tree to see if any pictures will fall out. :)

Lookin good Bernie.
What kinda cord is that?I like it.
-
I wish I could tell you, 2traxx. I bought a large (like a commercial, 1 lb size) spool of it at a yard sale, just cause I liked it. It is good quality, real strong, a little stiff. If you thought you could figure it out I could send you a small piece in an envelope. Or if you wanted enough for a wrap about that size I could send that in a larger envelope. There was no lable of any kind on it. It looked kind of like something natural to me but I just went in and checked some of it - and it melts - so I guess it's nylon or the like - (Shhhhhhhh! ;) )

oh bernie man you did one hell of a job i would be proud to own . good on you at least you have made one. as i have not done any thing like that.
-

Well Done, This made my night........Now enjoy the Fruits of labor....mark

Thanks a lot guys. I must say that it is one heck of a feeling - one I never thought I would get to feel - starting archery so late in life as I did (I was 56). I am so glad that Mike wouldn't let me get away with that excuse any longer - :D . Now I fully intend to make a few more, at least.
-
 That is one fine looking wrap Bernie. :notworthy:

I think I need to do mine that way. Pretty cool. I seen one done with twine. I wonder if you can get twine in green? I do like that color and I'm going to need a knife handle to match so now I have two projects to work on.
-
If you don't find green you can dye about 14 feet of it. The guy whos teutorial I followed said it takes dye well. (Or, I could send you a piece of mine - let me know, and give me a snail mail adee by e-mail or PM. You need "Dark Green" like this- LOL))
-
Thanks for the offer. I'm sure I can find something local. We have more craft shops around here than you can shake a stick at. I sure hope you post biuld alongs of your next projects. I really enjoy your stuff!
