Post by: killinstuff on February 01, 2008, 02:22:00 PM
Anyone have an update on those wild hogs running aroung here in Michigan? Anyone kill one or saw some while out hunting? DNR webpage is kind of short on info.

My buddy had one come in to his bait in November. We were in the St. Hellen area. It was still too dark to shoot so he passed. Jim

Oh yeah, the second weekend of gun season there were 2 hanging on the buck pole at a sport shop at the Tawas exit off I-75. They were BIG too. Jim

No it's the exit before West Branch. We were on public land when he saw that pig. Jim

The top picture under the Firefly pictures on the page link below is one we just got in that's a HUGE Michigan hog, I was told 325 pounds.

Not sure where in Michigan Rick took it though.

I have heard of a few in Ogemaw County have backed themselve into swamps on private land.

Those property owners are recluctant to allow access to get at them.

Word is there are pigs of various sizes, from itty bitty to quite large. They are indeed making babies. I bet coyotes don`t steal piglets like they do fawns.

A friend on another bow (manufacturer's) forum, ran a wild pig down on his uncle's farm in Lapeer County, MI. Ran one down with his pickup truck, that is. He said he went to his uncles farm to bowhunt and upon arriving noticed two wild pigs.

Here's his account of the episode:

"hey, last night i got one of the few of michigans new feral hogs. 2 stepped into a two track on my uncles farm as i was arriving. i gave chase and they veered into the vast open terrain of a freshly tilled bean field. i stomped the throttle, and the 8.1 liter from my chevy silverado hd roared to life. i closed the distance quickly and they parted ways, with the power wagon closing the distance. thud, crash, whomp, one pig down rolled up under the frame. i slung the truck to the north and my other victim was heading for the woods on a tear. i couldnt catch him in time.but theres always tommorow. used a 2001 black chevy silverado, hd, 8.1 vortec motor, allison transmission, 305 goodyear 8 belt tires. a good time was had by all. oh yea, didnt see any deer last night."

All the info I'm digging up is from 2006, kills, sightings, internet chat, whatever. Maybe those pigs are not doing as well as the DNR thought (worried?) they would. I'd still like to be able to get reliable location info, not someones hunting area but something like North of 55, West of 75 so I can start looking. Guess I'll start calling the gun stores and bait shops.

I'm going to find them Terry. Hunting pigs on foot is a blast, I just have to figure out were to start and it doesn't sound like anyone is doing it. Most are being shoot off bait piles during deer season as far as I can tell. Or run over with a truck lol. (kinda hard on the meat I'd bet)
