Title: Questions for Ron Laclair
Post by: Jim Boettcher on February 01, 2008, 11:38:00 AM
Mr. Laclair, could you tell me how you attach the cat whisker silencers on your bows so they make that nice round ball look? Also, on a 56" longbow, where do you locate them on the string from the limb tips? Thanks Jim

If you do an internet search for this:

Installing Rubber String Silencers Like A Pro

It shows you the way to mount them.  When they are done this way, they can be moved to find the "sweet spot".

Thanks Bob, if they are moveable to find the sweet spot will they stay put from shot to shot? I mean after you find the sweet spot, will they slide up or down on the shot? Jim

You really snug them down, and if you wanted, a drop of super-glue could lock them in once the spot is found.  They will stay put pretty well if you do them right, even without the glue.

For starters, use either 1/3 points or 1/4 points for location.

Jim,

this is how I do it. I fold one of the rubber strips and cut it with scissors to make two shorter pieces. I Wrap it on the string either with waxed dental floss or serving thread so I get my string prepared first, cut to length and I fold one end into a loop. I hold the looped end of the string in my mouth, then lay the two pieces of rubber on the string of the strung bow. The bow lays across my lap. While I hold the rubber in place with one hand I take the string  and lay the "loop" on the center of the rubber.

I wrap the string over the loop, loosely at first then after a couple wraps I tighten my wraps.I use 8 to 10 wraps and then stick the end of the string through the loop and draw it tight under the wrap.

Then while I hold the bow vertical between my knees I pull on the ends of the rubber horizontally and with the scissors, cut the rubber close to the end. I keep doing that until I've got  a ball of rubber with the ends sticking straight out.

From there you can slide it up the string. I like to have mine about 10" from the loop.

It takes a little time to master the process but it's worth the effort.

Thank you Mr. Laclair. I couldn't help but notice how quiet your bow was in Masters of the Barebow video. Jim

I looked up Doug Beshers pictorial instructions.  On my computer the pictures were not there. Just a little red x in the box where the picture was supposed to be.

Usually when you see a little red x it is because they used a server like photobucket to post their pics. The pics will show up as long as the person who posted them does'nt delete them from their photobucket account, or whatever server they are sharing from. Just my two cent's.

I love how quiet my sons and my Super Shrews are.  Quietest bows I've shot. It's just gravy on top of the accuracy and quick handling aspects.
