Title: New longbow required - top Bowyer short wait??
Post by: suttoman on January 31, 2008, 10:56:00 PM
You probably read my recent post - Centaur ordered!!  Jim has been great to deal with and this bow is going to be a real keeper.  However the bad news is that I have to wait over one year.

I want to order a short-term project.  Something that will be here in about two-three months.  I have five bows I will sell in the very near future.  This will help to sponsor the new project.

My question is, who can you recommend for a really nice R/D longbow with a high-wrist type recurve grip?  It will need to be a T/D to save on postage to Auss - I like three piece bows but a two piece would be fine.  Some of the ones I want to order have a worse wait than Jim.  I want the Brack non-typical, but his wait is 15 months!#$$^!!

I checked Morrison but they have no risers in stock that are high wrist - (looks as if they are not very popular), mostly low grip.

Or better still - who can you recommend that has a list of stock bows (other than Hornes, Martin, Whip {which I have} or Tomahawk ) that I could order immediately!?

Thanks of the help in anticipation.

Maybe (but not likely) Schafer would have one of those new three piece longbows in stock.  I've always heard good things about Pronghorn Longbows, but not sure if they come in a high wrist.  I'm pickin my brain here trying to come up with some more for ya, but ya know I'm a one piece kinda guy...lol.  Let me know what you decide...Mike

I have the Bob Lee - only a few weeks old.  that is one of my keepers, and one of the best bows I have ever owned!

'Stickhunter' Is fedora similiar to the Whip?? If I am correct is he the Person who trained Dan Toelke?  I have the Whip and need something different in style and shape.  If I am not mistaken they are very similiar to the Whip!

Oh yeah, and Fedora's one piece is like the Whip, but he also makes a three piece longbow.  Might be to your liking...Mike

What's wrong with a used R/D bow? Either from classifieds or the auction site-you could have it right away.

G'day Sutto,

Mate not sure if your a widow Fan or not mate but...

I just ordered a new PLX take down with the old LAG grip. The grip is from the older longbow model before the PL seris, and is more fuller in the plam than the newer model grip.

With the speed of the new limbs and the grip from the older model I think I've found a Longbow that I'll like. But saying all this, if you don't like BW's than .... I'm all out mate. Maybe a Tomahawk from 3Rivers...?

What bows are getting the sack mate..?

We've got a high grip Firefly in stock right now.  Fantastic bows priced below their true value.

http://www.braveheartarchery.us/new_page_22.htm

Stock #7-G-48 is a high grip.

Jim Jones absolutely is a top bowyer, although one you may not have heard of.  He'll build you whatever you want if that one doesn't suit you, usually only a couple of months to delivery.

If I posted what recent buyers have said about his bows I'm not sure you'd believe me...they are that good!       :D

Happy "bow hunting" whatever you choose.

I just ordered a Fox Royal Crown.  Boy, what a nice shooting bow! Smooth as silk, dead in the hand at the shot, and about as pretty a bow as I have ever seen.  It is a one piece, but Ron did say he has been playing with a two piece version.  Mine should be ready in May.

Thanks for the great suggestions all.  I checked out everything suggested (thanks for the P/M Mike), but only one appealed to me.

That was Fox Royal Crown (thanks so much 'Whip').  I have always liked these bows so much.  It looks like a refined version of my Martin Vision. The Vision is a good bow but I am sure the R/C is much better.

I remember I corresponded a year or so ago with the ex-world field bow champ.  If I remember correctly his name was Larry Yein (or something).  He had any bow at his disposal to use in his profession - and his bow of choice was the Royal Crown.  I reckon that speaks volumes.

I have written to Ron to see what his waiting time is, so will let you know when I get the reply.  The only thing that may kill me is the postage on the one-piece, but lets see if he is now making this in the T/D.

Al - you asked which bows are getting the sack: Toelke Whip
Renegade spirit ll
Martin Vision (unfortunately too heavy for me)
Martin Savannah
Bob Lee (I like it so much am going to order a new one in Bubinga - it is called the Elite)

consider a WAPITI Spike longbow from J.K. Chastain,  www.worldclassbows.com (http://www.worldclassbows.com)
with the takedown option you can model your own grip onto the take-down sleeve. Deliveries are usually short, even on custom bows!!!
The importance of a fitting grip can not be understated. I usually grind my grips into the forms I like even at the high prized ones.
the price is very reasonable for a two-piece and you get what you want

YOu can ask Ron, but I think Larry Yein shoots the Fox Triple Crown.  Very similiar unstrung profile, but when strung the Triple Crown has a traditional "D" shape which is required for the type of competion Larry shoots in.

The Royal Crown shows a reflex/deflex profile even when strung.  Also, the Triple Crown is 64" and longer, while the Royal Crown is 64" and under.

They are both very nice bows, but after shooting them side by side I went with the Royal in 64".

That is a good suggestion Pete P.  Even though money is not a problem I like to do a lot of research and ask lots of questions before I purchase a bow.  You may have seem my recent thread inquiring about the ACS.  My name came up on the list and I had to make a decision - they wanted a deposit.

Many kind folk answered my thread and after gleaning the information obtained, I decided not to order the ACS.  Am not saying it is not a good bow - however for the money I decided I could probably get two fun bows for the price of one.  Furthermore - from all that I read I believe my Centaur will be everything that the ACS is.

The bow I am inquiring about now is just a fun bow and something to help me with the long wait on the Centaur.  Thanks evrybody else for the suggestions - I will have a look at the threads now!
