Title: Junk Yard steel question?
Post by: Bobby Urban on May 20, 2011, 12:09:00 PM
I know without a true analysis it is a mystery at best but can anyone tell me a "most likely" source of 10xx steel found in a scrap yard?

I have access to a lot of 5160(likely) in old coil springs but want to try some 10xx and have not gotten aroung to buying any.

Thanks

Buy some old nicholson or Simmonds files.  They are 1095 per the manufacturers information.

Hey, Bobby. Perhaps this chart will help. It's not all correct and sometimes a little vague.  But is should provide a little direction.

Thanks Clay and Curt - that chart is exactly what I was looking for.  On that note - I am planning to order a big lot of known steel and just have a large stash that will last me years and keep my HT consistant.  Just looking into where I want to order it from.
