Title: Splitting Wedge?
Post by: gudspelr on April 15, 2011, 08:25:00 PM
My dad ran into some old wood splitting wedges that he's going to give me.  Any idea on whether or not they'd be good steel for hatchets/tomahawks?  No idea on the carbon content of such a thing-think it'd be able to heat treat well enough to work for a cutting tool?

It seems like they would work for a hawk or hatchet since that is kind of what they are already. I would say go for it but I'm definitely no expert. I have seen a bunch of them made from RR spikes that are low carbon with a piece of high carbon steel forge welded into the cutting edge. Good luck. Jason

They're designed to be smacked with a hardened sledge so they'll be relatively soft.  But they might harden up all right.

Thanks for the advice. Might give it a try.
