I have been wanting to try to forge a hammer head and have had a chunk of drive shaft about 2 1/4 inch in diameter that I picked up, so I finally tried it. I can see some room for improvement, but I did learn a few things from this one. I will probably make another soon. I think it settled in around 2 1/2 lbs

GREAT looking hammer Lin, really like that pattern. It is similar to the pattern of the #3 ive used for years.

Wow, Lin. That's something I'd like to participate in sometime.
It would probably test your skills on many levels.
Fabulous job.

Can you get one head going one way and the other 90* off?
Or even just 45*?

LIN looks great.

Karl, I dont see why you couldn't turn it. It's a round bar, so once you get the eye started, you have something to orient the faces to.

Really cool - I would like a lot more "build along" photos for the next one if I am not asking too much. Thanks for sharing Lin

Looks good Lin! The real test will be after it is handled and you start using it. Let us know how it does.

That's awesome Lin, is there anything you can't do :biglaugh:

You can make Hammer heads? That trips me out.
-
It's not a big deal. I think it's interesting to have a set of tools that I made myself. I want to make another hammer head a little heavier next. I tried this one today and it seems to work just fine.

Wow Lin,
That's very cool.

Like the other guys, I am very impressed Lin. It looks like a really nice hammer to me. I remember when I was young and there was a story about excess government spending, and the center stage object of that excess was a hammer the Air Force had paid $700 to purchase. I think now I may have seen for the first time a hammer that actually approaches that value.

Very nice Lin! You ought to have one on your table at the Blade Show, for "atmosphere".
How would you temper a hammerhead, so it will have long life, hold it's shape, yet won't develop cracks? I would think differently than a tool used for cutting.
