It's that time of year again (you know, to start a knife for the swap).
For those of you who don't really know who I am, I've organized a knife swap around here for the past 4 years. At it's largest there were over 80 knives swapped between TradGangers! WOW!
It'll be set up the same as in years past. You can enter as many knives as you like in the swap. They can be pretty much anything, as long as you made it (forging, stock reduction, "cheatr" knives, stone knives, etc) - sheath recommended, but not required (leatherworking is a whole 'nother skill to learn). You'll receive as many knives as you enter.
The deadline for this year will be May 31st
After the entry deadline, names will be drawn at random (ok, the computer randomly does it now) and I'll email everyone telling them who to send their swap knives to. It'll be a surprise to the recipients.
Here's the point I need to stress: when you finish your knives, email me with the number of knives you're swapping and your mailing address. Posting "I'm in" on this thread doesn't count Doing it this way we eliminate many of the problems various swaps have had in the past, such as guys who received, but didn't contribute and waiting for 6 months after the deadline to receive a knife.
You have a about 4 months to complete a knife. It seems like a lot of time, but believe me it's not! When you've finished your knives, please email me at
[email protected]
So, who's in
28April edit:
If you have a knife finished, please email me - even if you have already done so!
My computer crashed, hard, a few weeks ago and I was forced to wipe it clean and reinstall the OS. Ended up losing all emails and anything that wasn't in a public/shared folder.
-
Jeremy,
I have a series of knives I am working on completing over the next month. I will pick one out and put it into the knife swap. Thanks for putting this together. I have enjoyed the arrow swap over the last few years this should be pretty cool.
-
im in for sure got a knife blank started just the other day. and i to would like to thank you for putting this together.
-
I'm in too! I think I'll do a stone knife with a stabilized bone handle this year. Thanks once again for organizing a knife swap Jeremy! Jon

jon no reason to be ashamed
we all had to start somewhere
if your doing the best you can than thats good enough
i especially like to see how people progress both in skill and style after only a very short while
-
I'm in and can't wait! Making a kife from an old grinding wheel base from a local plnat that closed years ago.
-
I'd like to participate. Thanks for organizing it again, Jeremy.
-
yes sir count me in !

I'm in! Once I finish up one that I am most proud of, I'll post pics.
-
Is there a beginners category? Don't think it would be fair for an experienced knife maker to make a quality piece and get mine in return.
-
RM, don't worry about it. make the best blade you can and send it out. I had the same concern last year, still have it a bit this year too, but concensus around here was that people are happy with a blade that has heart and soul in it. If made with the right intensions the good folks around here are very understanding.
-
I'm in. I've been working on a saw mill blade, cocobolo and winge looks good to me, but a long way to go to catch up with you guys!
-
So what exactly is a cheater knife? Is it ok to use an old knife to build a new knife? What I mean is, is it ok to cut out the new knife from an old butcher knife? I don't want to say I am in until I am sure I am capable, lol.
-
John,
The term "CheatR" knife was coined by sticshooter a few years back and refers to just what you're talking about: taking an old knife and cutting it down to make something useful out of it. The old butcher knives seem to be the most popular to work with :) LOL yes I sure did. made whole lot of them there knves :biglaugh: .<><
-
So they can be used for the knife swap or no? I am sure that anything I come up with will not be as purty as any of the ones I have seen on here but I will try my darndest to make it better than nothing, lol. Thanks for putting this together Jeremy and for answering my questions so far,Mike.
-
Yup, always welcome in the swap. I received one in the first swap that still sees use :)

I've got two blades shaped, one needs heat treating while the other is a cheater. Just got to heat treat, put handles together, finish polishing and make some sheaths. No problems. :)

Will try to post picks tonight of the large skinner that I have done. Got to finish the finish and the sheath but the knife is done and I think looks pretty good.

If you have a knife finished, please email me - even if you have already done so!

Here's a pic that showed up in my inbox - I ain't tellin' from who ;)
Things are shaping up gentlemen, but we're getting close to the deadline!
-
Hey did the date change. I was shooting for the end of April not May. Thats not fair, I never hand anything in early. All the way back to kindergarten I was a hit the deadline guy. I may have ruined my reputation. OR!!!! I may have time to get another one finished hmmmm.
-
just sent you a email i did one this year thanks Gabe
-
Email sent. This is always fun.
-
ttt
emails are rolling in daily now! I'll get a list posted this weekend.

-
Can't wait! This is so much fun! Jon
-
Looks good to me. Can't wait, Christmas in june.
-
I know there are a few other guys who are close to finishing knives (me included) and I'm not being too strict this year, in part so I can actually participate! I haven't put a knife in the swap since '08 and the knife for this year is the one I had started for the '09 swap! That should tell you a bit about my available shop time! :readit:
-
Razorback and Jeremy...I can't keep ahead of myself (sounds like you know the drill, Jeremy!). I interpret at a State Historical Park in Nebraska and the Sutler's Store there has asked for some knives for their shelves. So, long story short, I've been working on that. BUT, if they don't all sell this weekend, I'll have one for the trade that could ship out Monday. If that's too late, then no problem. Thanks :)
Regards,
Curt
-
I know I could wait till Monday for one of your knives, Curt. You do wonderful work on all your projects.

When's the deadline to ship? I've got one just about finished, and would love to get in the trade if possible.
-
Thanks for all your work Jeremy.
-
Emails and PMs will go out tomorrow. I'll also try to post the swap list in a readable format.
Since many didn't send their addresses you'll most likely have to contact the person for the shipping addy anyway, so posting the swap list isn't going to be a big spoiler.
-
Ah the heck with it! Here's the list. Just look for your name and it'll tell you who to ship to. As I said, I have precious few addresses this year, so your best bet is to contact the person directly. I'll start sending out PMs and emails late this evening to make sure everyone sees this and to give addresses when I have them.
Glen Bennett ship to: tippit, GabeO, Jeremy
Doug Campbell ship to: bendbig
Tony Thornton ship to: skullworks
Clarence Smitherman ship to: John Steflik, razorback
Lowell Walker ship to: drewsbow
Frank Weingard ship to: TheBigRedArcher
Jeremy Steflik ship to: jonathan creason
Jon Shade ship to: madness522
John Steflik ship to: bendbig
Gabe Olguin ship to: drewsbow

Barry Clodfelter ship to: drewsbow
Jeff Springer ship to: James Oertel
Drew Reniff ship to: skullworks, longbowman, Jon Shade
Chris Scully ship to: Doug Campbell
Jonathan Creason ship to: bendbig
One note: the list is computer generated. In the past I checked it against previous year's lists to avoid guys swapping multiple times, but since those files were wiped out when the computer crashed...
-
Thanks for organizing this and doing the work Jeremy. I'm real excited to get my knife and to send mine out. Would be nice if we can all post pics of the knife we get.
-

Thanks to Jeremy and all who participated in this. Jeremy does the organizing but we as a collective group do the work and put the soul into the swap. Lets give ourselves a pat on the back, and get ready for next year.
