Title: Best adhesive for stacked leather grip?
Post by: Izzy on January 26, 2011, 05:42:00 PM
Im redoing an old WW2 Kabar, when I bought it the tang was stuck in an old deer hock. I would like to do this in a Scagel style with leather grip and antler pommel. What glue or epoxy should I use to stack the leather.******** Also, what kind of steel were they made from? Ive never been able to get anything as sharp as this old war horse.

                                  Thanks,Izzy

I use Dap contact cement for all my leather work. That's what I was taught to use and i've never had reason to change.  I'm sure there's lots of good stuff that others use as well.  Just stain the flats on the leather whatever color you are gonna use before you glue up.  That way when you grind to shape you wont have light spots where the glue wont take.  Not sure on the steel.  I have one and it sharpens to a scary shrarp very easily.  I'll be watching this one.

Titebond wood glue II or III works for me.  I use it for my sheaths and it works so well I can get away with not stitching.... the leather rips apart

I use Gorrilla glue. I use a clamp made with two square plates with a hole in the center and a hole on the corners to accept four bolts and a rod down the center. After the leather is clamped tight, remove the rod in the center. Works well.  Knifemaker

just finished a knife for one of my customer's , i use 30 min epoxy to stick leather washers together , well you should first stack on tang , soak in water , compress somehow let dry , take apart , keep in order , then put back with epoxy , , grind to shape , then i use superglue for final finish .
