Yep thats right Doc got me in the mood to hammer a big one. I never posted anything like this before . So I thought I would try and show ya
how I do it.I am very UNSCIENTIFIC but then I was never good in science LOL. This was a Big rasp not a farriers rasp some other kind( I have no idea what kind). I was told it was over 40 years old. First I heat her up HOT and then commence to hammering till I get it thinned down and flat.Took about 14 trips to the heat(forge) to get where I wanted her.

Then work her into shape and even more flattening till I like what I see.

Then its back into the forge and heat up agian and let cool to get here soft enough to grind. It takes hours for it to cool enough that I can work it. But when she is cooled down I grind to shape and the put a Flat grind on her.

Then I sand the blade down smooth and drill the handle for pins and to lighten it up to balance it. I do that by how it feels in hand. Then its back into the forge and then quench and cool and then bake in oven to temper.

Stic,
Very nice!! It's a lot of fun to see how others do their forging from raw material to a nice blade. Looking at all the beautiful finished knives is kinda like coming into the end of a movie that your wife is watchin' and askin' "What Happened" :D Thanks for the post...Doc

Stic, Thanks for posting this, if ya don't mind me askin, what type of oil and temp do you use for quench? and what temp and length of time to temper?
Thanks,Gene

I quench inbetween 120 and 140 I temper at 400 for 1 hour and then agian for 30min. This is for files and rasps. The sawsteel comes out of quench are 57-58 rockwell according to the guy that does the testing at work for me. I just did some chopping this morning with it. Will have pics of that and with sclaes on. thanks<><

Ok Temper is done and she was sharpened up. So did a little hacking on some limbs in the yard, that is until shell put a stop to it. So I then I found a old 2x4 and in less then a min I had hacked through it and still shaved. Not bad should work great.
