Title: Lets See Your HELLE Knives......
Post by: Nala on July 15, 2010, 02:55:00 AM
Hey all,

I have been thinking of picking up a Helle blade and making myself a knife.  I have always wanted to make a knife and this looks like a good what to get into it.
I have looked at several sites that show both knives and blades for building up and I just can't make my mind up as to what would work best for HOGS and such.  I like the Harding, the BraKar, the Safari and others that I can't remember the names of right now.  I also have thought of getting one of the inexpensive Carbon Tollekniv blades and making it into a knife.  It looks like it would be a good knife to have on a HOG or a deer hunt or much any other hunt for that matter.

So, how about you all show your Helle knives that you have.  Doesn't matter whether you made them or bought them already made.  I would like to see the work done by members on these Helle blades cause I am sure there are some very talented members here that have made some great looking Helle knives.

Also, if you don't mind, can you suggest what Helle knife model or blade you think would work best for HOG dressing and such?

Thank you kindly for your time and help.

Kip, What a beauty setup. Well done. I'm thinking of ordering a new bow soon and never thought of asking for the "extra" pieces for other uses. Good idea.
Good thread Nala, I'm also keen on these knives. Looking forward to more posts.

Here's a warning before you get started. Knives are a sickness!  I started with the Helle blades to get rid of some small wood scraps I had leftover from bowbuilding. BIG MISTAKE!  Now I cut my blades from stock, grind them, make mosaic pins. (a friend heat treats them for me)Not to mention I had to get some leather tooling supplies to dress my sheaths up a bit.
Helle blades are a great way to get started. The blades are EXTREAMLY sharp out of the box. Promptly cover them with masking tape to protect yourself and the mirror finish.  With some imagination, you can do alot with them.
Here are some pictures that show my progression with Helle blades. I sure was proud of those first ones. You'll get better with each one.
 Have fun with them! Mike
