Title: Sharpening a Guthook
Post by: jacobwyn on July 13, 2010, 06:30:00 PM
Hey guys this has probably been covered before, but I was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas on getting a gut hook razor sharp. I've tried a rattail file and that just doesn't seem to work well, but it just maybe me. Thanks a lot for your time and input.

Chainsaw file with lighter strokes as you co and then a ceramic rod if you need.  Also can use a little rubbing compound on a leather wrapped rod or file but that is probably overkill for what they are used for.

I use one of the pointed diamond rods that is retractable. It is taper from a fine point to about pencil size. I think I got mine at Walmart.

The principle for sharpening is the same for a guthook as with the main edge. The only problem is the shape.

I think, if it's really dull, start with a file, but most could begin with a round rod (file) wrapped in sandpaper, starting course as necessary to fine. Get a burr or it aint going to be sharp when you strop.

Keep your angle consistant. Lin
