I agree with Clarence  thats probally the best book .

The next  one  would be (Handles and Guards) by Joe Keeslar.

Next would be a Local Hammer in if theres one in your area

After that ABS aprentice school at Old Washington

I would respectfully disagree about the $50 Knife Shop by Goddard.  I have always wanted to try making a knife and I had heard this was a great book to have so I bought it.  Now I know almost nothing about getting a piece of steel and working it into an actual knife and that's what I wanted to learn how to do.  This book doesn't tell you hardly anything about actually MAKING a knife.  The book is what the title says it is "$50 KNIFE SHOP."  It tells you how to get the tools and set up a "shop" to make knives on the cheap, NOT how to make knives.

After looking through the book for about 30 minutes I took it back.

Like I said, I have NEVER built a knife in my entire life and want to know how and what to do.  Take my recommendations for what they are worth on this book.  I am still looking for a book that actually tells about HOW TO MAKE A KNIFE or at least gives you some guidelines and walks you through what you BASICALLY have to do.

Good Luck in your search.

I've never read $50 work shop, but Goddard's other book, "The Wonder of Knifemaking" has tons of good info.  It's in the Memphis library and I've checked it out many times and made pages of notes from it.

I have a very nice book by Richard Barney and Robert Loveless, titled "How to Make Knives".
I do not read it anymore. It is in excellent condition.  If you paypal me 10 bucks to [email protected] , I'll ship it to you.

Thats a good one, its the first one I ever bought! Its mostly stock removal, grinding. If you are interested in forgeing I would suggest "Ed Fowlers Knife Talk II" it has everything you need to know to make the best knife you possibly can. Also check out "knife talk online" its a great forum and someone there can answer any questions you have.
