Til yesterday, I had no idea what the word Kiridashi was  When I saw Scott's post Clouds & Rain Dashi...very nice compact blade. I recognised that style from a utility blade Jason Knight had made. I had taken a picture of his blade plus a drawing where he was going to add a bottle opener...like my beer blades :)

Then I went in on Tia Goo's forging site and was completely mesmerised by his work! Not only the kiridashi blades but the really cool rolled hollow handle blades. That was all I could stand. I got up early and tried my hand at a couple kiridashis myself.
They are fun little palm utility blades. Fairly easy to make. I did a hollow grind instead of the traditional Japanese single bevel. My sharpest blades seem to be a shallow 8 inch wheel hollow grind with a convex edge.
Scott, Thanks for broadening my horizons...Doc
Top has finger hole for third finger to keep it firm in your palm. Control of blade is with first finger and thumb.
Middle has a rolled hollow handle that would allow a stick to be attached. I had trouble with that as I wasn't sure how Tia did his handle. I tried to roll it around a hawk mandrel. I emailed Tia and he was kind enough to explain how he just forged in on the anvil horn...need some practice there!
Bottom just a little palm blade.

Dang, that was quick!
Great stuff, I may make one for cutting leather for sheaths as my first project.
Lookin forward to some neat stuff now that you are working at making TiaGoo-ish stuff. Some of his twisted handle work is unfathomable to me...

nice,, would be great for anything, even for self defense

You're right, Tia does some awesome work. Those are socket handles. You might can do a search and get some info on them. Nice little cutters. I bet they will come in handy. Lin

Thanks Lin...I'll search that for sure.
One more ready for quench. Then I gotta close up shop, start thinking about seeing the real bladesmiths at the Blade Show next weekend, and start packing for bear hunting...Doc

very cool selection! i really like the 'blacksmith' style with the curled tang. there are so many design options eh? my next one will be more of a skinner...
fyi.. his name is actually Tai... just to save you some embarassment if you meet him at Blade!
-
I guess I'm a little dyslectic...Thanks!
-
Nice work Doc!
Good luck on the upcoming bear hunt!

Yes it is Tai. I am thinking it correctly but miss spelling it at the same time. :) Lin

Could you make me one with just the beer opener? I'm affraid the design you drew would be perfect for cutting off my left index finger. Then I'd be faced with that age-old redneck conundrum... rush to the ER, or finish my beer. :goldtooth:

Kiridashi's Quenched & Tempered ...these two came out with a great feel in the hand. Also added a little snake rattle to the end of the palm kiriachi. The edge design is down right :scared:
I've always used the tradgangers at Bear Quest for my R&D dept ;) This year will be quite different to see the reaction to a kiridashi in a hunting/skinning mode!

Bear's Question about the safety of the Beer Opener:
I have two different designs pending total consumption.
1) For the guy/gal who only drinks One Beer and doesn't need a designated driver:

2) For the guy/gal who intends to go through more than One 6-pack  This is designed in the butt of the handle so you Never have to pull your blade from the Sheath. Only problem, your buddies will know your total consumption by how wet your leg is on the side you Pop the Top :bigsmyl:
