Well here it is just One Day after I said I Wouldn't Bore ya'll with any more silly posts & pictures :knothead:
But this is kinda an emergency...See Mr Campbell sent me a U-tube video on a guy dispatching a wounded water buffalo that was mauling his father. Amazingly he did it with a Knife!!! I think it was from Cold Steel. Anyway Doug said that's the reason to carry a Big Knife.
Ya'll know I tend to make & carry small knives. On top of that, I tend to due a fair amount of bear hunting. Now I never though about it...but I must be just dumb lucky not to have had a bear chewing on my leg in the past. Therefore I decided I needed a Bear Insurance Policy.
Eleven inches of cold steel (not to be confused with the brand Cold Steel) and slim enough to slip between bear ribs. Now I'm feeling better and won't bother ya'll anymore...Doc

Very cool blade. I'm actually considering a Cold Steel Bushman knife not only because I saw it in action when my friend helped skin a deer I shot but the fact it has a hollow tube handle you can use as a spear.

Good luck on the bear hunt this year and I hope you wont need your "insurance policy" for anything more exciting than cleaning a nice expired bear!

If your at knife range with a bear you got a lot of problems. A knife may not solve them. Bears have big teeth and claws. Rule of thumb is play dead with a Grizzly and fight to the death with a Black Bear. The Black Bear has every intention of either eating you or making sure you are very dead before they are done with you. I always carry bear spray and a backup firearm ( legal in my state ). Along with a tomahawk so I figure I am rather over prepared.

Doc--that was a CAPE buffalo! Not a very funny situation unless you are listening to the audio in slow motion :D

It was indeed a very serious situation with the hunters just standing by doing nothing as the PH got pummeled by that buffalo. I surely don't make light of that situation and I don't expect to use this blade to defend myself against a black bear. The nice thing is most black bears are more afraid of you. My bow is my real defense if necessary.

The blade is thin with a lot of flex. Probably better in the kitchen. Guess I'd best keep a good eye on it while Bowdoc is cooking or it may end up in his duffel :eek: Doc

I wasn't inferring anything about you. Knowing the fella made it out OK, I got a chuclke out of the slo-mo audio of the clip; I should not joke around so much :knothead: . That was a very brave son.

Very Nice!!! I am working on one for the kitchen that is very similar( although not at your talent level) Was it that thin, or close to it, when you heat treated? A better question: How thin did you profile the blade before heat treat? I am a little worried about warpage in the quench when I get to that point with such a thin profile. Again - sweet knife. probably my favorite you have done

My blades are almost finished when I quench. I take them to 400 grit and hit them with a coarse Scotch Brite belt before quenching. The edge is sharpen-able at that stage. If they warp some at quench, I found you can take them out of the quench with gloves and hand straighten. Not just my thing, as I learned that trick from a couple of master smiths...Doc

Cool knife Jeff. I have seen boar hunting knives with a simular profile. I also favor 5-6" blade's these days. Not so much to ward off angry critters but I have decent size hands and a larger knife fits my mitts better. Beside's, if it ever came down to hand to hand with something or someone with bad intentions, it's good to know you have a blade on your side that will take care of business.
This is a Cold Steel outdoorsman that has found it's way onto my belt. 6" of san mia steel will take care of most tasks.
