Just picked up a coal/charcoal forge today. The property manager at our summer camp found 2 in the local dump a few years ago and has been storing them in his shop for several years. It is the type with a shallow 4-6" round tub, the hand blower is attached to the side and the tyuere (sp) is a grate in the middle of the tub. Ash clean out is under the grate and blower. I am excite4d to get this thing burning.
Does anyone use one of these and have any tips for a new user.

you are lucky my friend... I'm building my first charcoal forge right now and would love to have one like yours. I would try Anvil Fire or Youtube has lots of good stuff.
btw... have you looked into a source of coal? Or you gonna make charcoal? I was gonna use charcoal for mine, but I just found a giant source of coal....

I forged with coal for a few years before I switched to propane.
Since you live in New York you shouldn't have much trouble finding Pocahontas #3 coal. It's the best you'll find for forging.
It's pretty easy to turn a nice piece of steel into a sparkler, so take it slow!
The time will come when just can't wait to fire that forge up.
Something special about a nice coal forge.

Thanks guys. Yeh I'm going to start with charcoal, cause thats what I've got, but will probably shift to coal. I love old free stuff.
