Just received my Helle knife blade from the great people at Dryad. Going to do something with Osage and Walnut to match my Ancient Spirits Thunderhawk.
I'm curious to see how some of you fellas may have built yours. Let's see 'em!
-
Okay, I'll go first.
This is the one I made to trade for a dozen wood arows. Both of us involved in the trade were very happy.

Stop making me drool, I lost my trusty knife of more than 20 years a couple seasons back and need to buy another. Funny thing I found that knife near a trout stream in Michigan while enjoying the trout opener as a kid. It was rusty and pitted and the tip was broken off from misuse, took a long time on a stone to put it right and it never was a "Looker" after that. It was a trusty companion though and served me well for many seasons. I choose my knives like I choose my hunting partners....very carefully, as I expect them to be with me for a very long time.
Awesome knives guys, Im a sucker for the stag handle models.
-
Rascal,
These are all build your own models. We sell ya the blade and parts if ya want then you go for it and build the knife you always wanted.
Mike
-
Oh now come on Wingnut, you want me to start another project?? Hehe I may just have to do that, after all I have plenty of reasons.
#1 Lost my trusty knife.
#2 These knives are B-E-A-utiful.
#3 I could build 2 and smooth it over with the wife (his and hers).

Wow I just got the chance to check out the link to the Helle knife kits, I am very impressed with the selection as well as the price. Always nice to see so many styles of blades available not to mention they are straight gorgeous.
How are the blades for taking and holding an edge? Do they come sharp if you buy blades to build your own or dull in the kit form? Is it difficult to do an antler handle? I have several sets of antlers to choose from and Im partial to that sort of handle.
-
Shad they are very sharp need to tape up to work the handle.Beautiful knives everyone. Thanks Ramon and Micky.I know the bow works hope I can get the knife bloody soon.Kip

Here's some of mine...

Clint those are awesome brother. Wow a knapper aa knife maker, and a leathersmith
-
Thanks Mickey, that means a lot coming from you.
My problem is I've got way too many things I like to do. You know the old saying...jack of all trades, master of none.
I just wish I had more time to play, but there just aren't ever enough hours in the day.
-
Rascal,
They are scary sharp. They hold a good edge as most of them are laminated steel with a very hard inner layer with two milder steel outer layers to provide strenght to the more brittle hardened layer. Haven't sharpened mine yet, but knowing my skills, I'll never match the factory edge.
-
Here's mine with my bow both from Wingnut. Osage and cocobola in handle and bow. Season opens oct 1st hope to bloody both then.

I made this one for a Tradganger. He sent me the Helle BraKar Blade which is 5" long. I added the antler bolster area and the ironwood handle. It has a SS guard and red, white & blue spacers. Over all length is 10"
