Title: Western Cutlery Bowie Knife
Post by: Ssamac on November 19, 2009, 11:39:00 PM
Is this company still in business? Friend of mine has a nice Western Cutlery Bowie, not a handmade but good steel and a solid knife. Wondering where to get one, even used. Any suggestions?

Thanks
sam

Hi Sam,
Your best bet is at a flea market or on an on-line auction. Western has been out of business since the late 70's I think, Camillus (sp?) bought them out and most of their lines were "modernized" with hard rubber and plastic handles etc. I have seen quite a few of the old bowies on line.
Good luck!
Harry

Yup, Coleman outdoor products bought them first and then they were absorbed into Camillus and Camillus went out of business.  I have an old Western W36 and it's a great knife, good blade geometry and good steel.  I wasn't too impressed with any of the Camillus/Western stuff.  I see some decent deals on fleaBay every now and then.  My 80 year old friend Dean has a small Western that he had since he was a boy.  Calls it his "tater knife" because he always used it to prepare camp meals when we were on camping/hunting trips.
