Title: Reclaimed/Resurrected Knife Challenge
Post by: Jeremy on November 11, 2009, 09:31:00 AM
I have a bunch of reclaimed materials and thought it might be fun to see what y'all could come up with.

Here are the rules: Make a knife out of what I send you - and only what I send you (you can use epoxy, solder, handle finish etc) - and post your progress here.

Here are the materials:

*Front leaf spring from an '77 International Scout.  It seems to be 5160 or something very close to it.
*Walnut from shipping pallets
*Solid brass door kickplate - great for spacers
*1/8" brass rod I picked out of someone's scrap bin
*section of copper pipe - be creative

If I find something else interesting in the shop or transfer station I'll include that as well.  If you're interested in playing along all it'll cost you is the $5 for shipping.

If all goes well, maybe these could be auctioned off individually or in groups for the St Jude auction?

So... who's in?  :D

You can email me at [email protected] with your shipping info and can paypal the shipping money to the same addy... or just wait until you have my address and send me a check.  Either way works for me.

There will be enough steel for at least two knives if you're doing stock reduction and more if you're forging.  The springs are 1/4" thick x 2" wide

I will hop in on this challenge.  What time frame are we looking at for the challenge?
Title: Re: Reclaimed/Resurrected Knife Challenge

I wasn't going to set a time frame.  I know I won't be able to get to it until after January, I just wanted to see what everyone could come up with if given the same materials and I liked the recycled theme.
I'm not getting time in the shop currently and not getting out hunting, so I needed some form of amusement.  Watching others work seemed a good idea  :)

As long as there's no time frame and my forge to-be is still in the thought process, I'll play...Doc

Gotcha Clay!

A time frame would make this seem like work, not play!  :)

I still need to do the last bit of silver inlay on a knife and a few other handles before I can start anything new... shop time the last 10 months has been rare and mostly dedicated to fixing whatever is broken!

I've had a whole mess o' stuff come up around the house the last two weeks (it is the Holiday season afterall and we're approaching D-day for my new daughter   :scared: ) so I haven't been in the shop to cut up the steel for everyone.

Just wanted to let you all know I haven't forgotten about you!!  I have all your addresses and will get the materials out to you as soon as humanly possible!

We can post progress pics right here... as soon as I get the materials out!

I have next week off from work, the boy will be at daycare and the new baby isn't due until the 10th, so I should be able to get everything out early in the week.  The nursery is coming together, but still needs more paint - my wife opted for another complex mural and this one is taking just as long as the last one.  Here's part of Evan's... his sister is getting a coral reef

I assumed that meant he will send the stuff out in January, so maybe in a couple weeks we'll have the stuff?

Yup guys.  Materials should go out in a day or so.  Most everything is cut up.
The holidays were hectic - and the septic system backed up... ever try getting in touch w/ a plumber on a holiday weekend?  Ended up pulling up floor boards to get everything cleaned up.  My daughter was born on the 7th... we made it to the hospital w/ 8 minutes to spare!  :D   So I beg your patience just a little longer.

I cut up the copper pipe today and boxed everything up.  I can't seem to find the addresses for two of you (PMs sent) but here's the list:

Ray, Doc, mater, Clay, Dana, longbowkid, mossanimal, Nosight and Me.

Everyone is getting ~8" of the spring (I did not anneal it) which is enough for at least 2 knives depending on how you're making them.  That'll let you do a test blade if you so choose, or just another knife.

Also included is a section of copper pipe, 1/8" brass rod, walnut, some brass kick plate and a short length of 14/2 wire.

got my box. No wire present...but then, the USPS had bashed the box and contents were hanging out when I pulled it from the mailbox.

Can we add things like fiber spacers...or only use what's in the box?

All but 2 of you should have the stuff.

Ray, the challenge is to use only what's in the box (with some epoxy, solder anf finish of course), but there's enough steel for more than one knife.  The wire was just 3" or so of 14/2.

Dana, lots can be done w/ the pipe  :)  You don't have to leave it round either.  The wire is a little limiting, but 4-5 things come to mind that aren't too much trouble.

I think I'll be making two very different knives.  Have fun and be creative guys!

I laughed out loud on that one Dana. I know what you mean. Can you split it and straighten it and use it for the guard? Lin?

Yeah, once flat you can use the pipe like any other spacer material; or inlay into the handle for engraving, etc.  Look to some traditional Japanese knives for other ideas    :readit:   At least one of mine will be along those lines.
The wire though... well, it's easy to use that as pins, either individually or twisted and pounded round (maybe with some colored epoxy ala mosaic pins), but while I was installing a new light fixture in the living room last week something else occured to me.  I ain't telling!  heehee.

Lin, you want in on the fun?  I've plenty of scrap... err... steel  :D

Jeremy,
I would but I really am strapped for time right now. I have a show in 4 weeks and have to make several knives and hold a job too. Maybe, if we do another one next year. I am anxious to see the creations that come from it. I'm rootin for all of ya. Lin

Clay, the package showed up at my door w/ "no such address" stamped on it.  Found the problem though: the email you sent me said 7th Court, not 27th  :)

Here's my effort in the works...  :readit:

10" OAL, camp/ bowie/skinner style.  :D   Flat ground with some pretty filework. Cant get decent pictures of it though.

Got some nice ideas flowing in my head for the scales as well.

Anyone else started?   :campfire:

I have drawn three seperate knives on the steel and may adjust their sizes a bit.  I am thinking of making two small skinners and a push knife.   I have the steel annealed and have to find time to bandsaw the basic billet into three pieces and then I can start the forging process.

I've heard/seen the beginnings of one (2?) knives and silence from the rest.

I haven't been in the knife shop in months either!

Just wondering. Love seeing the homemade stuff. While I think the forged knives are beautiful and deffinately a work of art, I love to see what the average joe with a grinder, dremel, and a belt sander with some old clothes hanger and a piece of walnut or cherry board can make from whatever he finds laying around.
