the title says it all does anybody have any ideas for a cheap alternative?
-
No. Just use the real thing.
-
You really want to cheap out with forging temps???!!!!!
-
It's not expensive and you can buy it by the foot.
I built my largest forge over a year ago and it looks like the day I made it, even with flux damage from making Damascus.
I probably don't have $16.00 worth of Inswool in it.

not that i want to cheap out but i cant find a canadian supplier. even though our dollar is fairly strong the shipping would cost as much as the insawool.maybe i shouldnt have said said cheaper just an alternative that would work. if not im gonna have to bite the bullett and order some.thanks guys

Try this link here:

There's all types of refractory suppliers in Canada.

ALso, right where I get mine here in Chicago, Harbison Walker, has a distribution center in Edmonton.
Go here: http://www.hwr.com/
click on "locations" and then "distribution centers".
Scroll down and you'll find a map and a Harison Walker in Edmonton.
Maybe they can tell you where to buy small amounts.
Another point to consider, when buying materials for making knives, buy them with the forethought that you WILL NEED MORE IN THE FUTURE!
When I bought mine, I bought a full box of 25 feet. I'll have it when I need it.

More help here from some good people on a knife making forum:
"Have him call either Windsor Factory @ 313-965-7740 or Lunar Industrial 313-965-7477. The numbers are MI. phone #'s but they will get the call in Canada".
