Title: Not happy with Lauri blades.
Post by: R H Clark on July 18, 2009, 07:06:00 PM
I made two knives with Helle Tollekniv blades a couple weeks ago and sold them to the first two people I showed them to.

I wanted to try some blades with a higher grind so I ordered some Lauri blades. They are carbon blades listed as 59 RC.These are also Scandi grind blades.

Two of the blades came with terrible secondary bevils ground at the tips. They looked like something my 10 year old would have done.

They are only about $11 each so I decided to work on one of them.Just to see I tried a Nicholson mill bastard file on the terribly ground tip.To my suprise the file cut fairly well and I was able to reprofile the uneven ground tip.

Now I am very concerned about the temper-hardness of the other blades.Am I correct that the file should not have cut the blade bevil?

No, the file should have skated off, just scratching the blade had it been 59RC.
