Title: New Poplar/Antler Hunter
Post by: LONGBOWKID on February 15, 2009, 11:14:00 PM
Just finished this one up for a close friend.

Poplar and deer antler scales, 6 ga. copper for the pins. So sharp you don't want to be in the same room with it.

Not bad for #4...

Longbowkid,

How did you like working with that poplar? A few years back when I used to build solid body guitars I used some poplar for "wings" on a guitar. It was really "fuzzy". I could not get it to sand as smooth as I was used to with other woods like maple or ash. I like the poplar because of the different shades of greens and browns and some times purple. I finished this particular guitar in Formby's tung oil. I looked great!

I like your knife!!!

Woodsman1031: Sounds like your wood wasnt as dry as it could have been. Seeing as how your in Tx. I kinda doubt thats the problem.

It was quite a pleasure to work with, wasnt "fuzzy", but I have had cedar act like that. I think another reason is, one particular piece of wood can be a higher quality than another.

The scales are from a piece that had green, brown, and purple in it.

This one was sanded from 100 to 1500 grit, and finished with tung oil, so its like glass...

Thanks for the compliment..

That really did turn out nice Kid. Did you use hidden epoxy rivits on that antler? I've got a feeling that the lighting doesnt do it justice. Try taking a pic outside on a cloudy day....

Actually, the epoxied part is probably The strongest! LOL. I was just askin 'cause I didnt see any pins. It's hard to beat epoxy for holding power on a Flat clean surface.
