Title: Solid Steel Boot Knife (Finished) *New Pics*
Post by: LONGBOWKID on February 11, 2009, 08:36:00 PM
This is one in the making, still have to temper and buff again.

Made from a 12" Nicholson Mill Bastard.

Multi-purpose, skin and gut your critter, use the butt end to pound something, or make that hog think twice about his decision to charge.

Mods: If this is out of place, feel free to DELETE this thread, if it dissapears, I will know why.

Yep. Ian, I was the "cause" of it. I really hope this isnt violating the rules. Because its two edged, is it NOT a hunting knife? Or is it the blade shape? I think it is definetely a hunting knife, if anything, it would stick a pig quite well!

A bowie was designed as a fighting knife, not a hunting knife. I really don't see that my knife above ISN'T a hunting knife.

As I said above, if this is violating rules, please remove it no questions asked...

I saw a double edged dager for sale once.  The caption said it was designed after one Davey Crocket had carried.  One side was used for rough work and the other with a keener edge.  Don't know if ol'Davey really had one of those but I like the idea of a "sticker".  Neet knife.  I would carry one like that hunting.  But I usually have about 3 at one time while I hunt.

The double edged knife was carried for hundreds of years as a hunting knife. Because of the scarcity of good steel, it made sense to have two edges, as one would dull halfway through a job. The different edge grind Idea was employed as well, not only on knives, but axes as well. One edge was sharpened with a thin edge (very sharp) and one was kept at a thicker, more durable angle. Having seen the other knifethat others considered a fighter, I would argue that Its larger size, more pronounced belly, and wider blade would have made it a more efficient "Hunter" than the one shown here. It had the profile of a Machaxe, and would have made a decent all 'round camper. As for Boar hunting, I'd take the bigger one anyday...'specially if thonged to the end of a pole  :saywhat:  ANY knife can be a fighting knife... It's OUR intended use that makes the difference in how it is perceived.

What States are those? I wanna mark 'em on my list of places I don't wanna visit! Most that do will have hunting exceptions. 'Course, it's illegal to carry straight blade knives of any sort in most towns or cities. Gimme the countryside... No one even blinks at the 12 in bowie on my hip. Just a tool...

Actually brother, Bowies are outlawed in quite a lot of places, due to thier "fighting knife" designation. Ironically, if you read a lot of these laws, the use the term "Bowie" to describe just about ANY large knife. The laws were typically written in response to certain crimes, passed during a time of public outrage, and were useless in the prevention of the crimes they were intended to prevent. I've noticed that when the law tries to disarm the citizens, only the law abiding ones (that were not commiting the crimes anyway)comply. In SC it is illegal to sell or purchase a small .22 pistol from a gun shop... It's cosidered a "Saturday Night Special"
But you can buy/sell a .38 snub backup. Go figure.

I think it turned out quite nice. It holds a good edge and is razor sharp.

I think I will make another, with wood scales...
