Title: Buddy's first knife build...
Post by: OkKeith on January 27, 2009, 05:18:00 PM
Hunting partner and I got infected by the knife building bug. He managed to do something about it before I did. I believe his effort came out excellent, so I thought I would share it with all ya'll.

His goal was to craft a largish, heavy knife for when we go on our bowhunting/camping/roughing it/deal with whatever occurs/poorly planned outings. It should be able to pound in tent stakes. pry the top off SPAM cans, cut steaks on the plate and (with technology borrowed from Mr.Tippit) open beverages. The finished knife is 13 inches in total length and was made from a file.

Here are some in progress photos:

And a finished photo taken on top of all the ice we are dealing with right now:

The end of the handle is tappered and thinned a little to use for prying, and the area between the finger gaurd and the blade was left wide and flat for pounding. The influence of Tippit's beer blades is obvious. I hope to do something about my knife building bug real soon as well.

Yeah we tried a flared finger guard but didn't get it as wide as we wanted.  Gonna need a hotter flame the next time. Again, sorry Tippit for using your blade and para handle but you know the saying “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”  :)  they were just to cool not to use.

Keith, Nothing to be sorry about.  I certainly like it.  In fact I'm off to see how the real pro flares his finger guard in NC next month...Joe Keeslar.  tippit

He plans on having it at OJAM this year. We'll let him pry whatever needs pryed, pound whatever needs pounded and open all that needs opening.

He asked me to pass on thanks for all the compliments.
