Title: How doYou set bevel angle?

Was wondering How some of You set Your bevel angle to get such pretty lines? Do You use jigs Or just the tool rest on Your grinder?  :banghead:   Could be that I am a clumsy,no patience,hard headed type guy!!!Thanks in advance. C-Yall Bob

I do all my grinding by freehand including the bevel...no jigs or tool rests.  Guess I need some formal instruction on making knives...tippit

Freehand for me too!
I keep meaning to try a jig, but I always figure by the time I've made one, I could've ground a dozen blades!  :D

My sentiments exactly Rob and tippit. Grinding is all freehand. Of course I flat grind and the bevel is set by the thickness and width of the blade. As long as I make "normal" shaped blades, the grind takes on a similar angle. Lin

 mwmwmb I believe this must be where the hard headed or maybe STUBBORN part of my reality comes into play! I know My freehand is getting better (just hopein for an easier way I guess) so hang in there brother. These Guys really do inspire Me!!!  :thumbsup:    :notworthy:

After you grind a few blades of the same size and shape you will see that the geometry of the blade lends itself to particular lines. You'll run into the same good things and also the same problem areas. When you think your gettin pretty good, you may actually just be getting more familiar with grinding that blade pattern. If you change blade patterns, the learning process starts over again.

I believe a maker can get to anticipating the way the different lines play out in the grind even before the blade is forged or cut. I also believe that to be convinced of this, a maker has to try to make some different shaped blades and see the relationships of lines and cross sectional geometry and how they play off one another. Just thinking out loud. Lin

Hey Lin Your feedback is always interesting and helpful so keep thinkin out loud! Ok by Me. Ground several out of the only plow disc I have today and they all came out quite differnt.Am down to 2 blanks left from it and they will be larger than the ones I ground today But good or bad I will show the whole bunch here in hopes of learning more. As always all help is appreaciated Folks!
