Lowes and Home Depot have small amounts of steel in good sizes to work with. Does anyone know what kind it might be?

Mild structural steel, low carbon and pretty useless for a knife blade.

You know you're only about 45 minutes from me?
There are Fastenal stores all over Indiana and Illinois that will have about whatever type of steel you are in search of.
I have a cousin that lives in Williamsport that I actually come and visit from time to time.
When motorcycle ridin' weather comes around, I'll stop and pay you a visit.

I tried some steel from Menards and found it to be no good for a knife. Heated and quenched it and it didn't get real hard. I ordered some 01 from Jantz and had good luck with that.

Your far better off sticking with known knife steels. You don't want to pour your heart into a blade only to find out it won't harden and take on the spirit of a true knife!
