Title: 1x30 belts?
Post by: imskippy on December 27, 2008, 10:12:00 AM
Hey guys I picked up a used 1x30 to get me going for now. What type of belts do you use for the blades and wood? Do you use any zirconia belts or the standard aluminum oxide. I see they don't make much so the standard red belts may be my only choice. Thanks in advance. SKippy

If you don't mind my asking what did you give for used 1x30 and where did you find it? I've been using a borrowed scrollsaw and disc sander combo that is way underpowered for everything. I'm looking for something better on a low budget.

Trugrit.com has plenty of grits and styles for 1x30 machines.  I really like those Norton ceramic belts for my 2x72.

harbor freight has them for like 89 cents a pop, and they last longer than all the other ones i have found. hopefully in about a month all i'll have to worry about is 2x72!

Thanks guys. I was going to try some dofferent types and see how they are. I just happened to check craigslist the other day and saw one for $25 so I jumped on it. It's the same one they sell at harbor freight for $50 new. Haven't had a chance to try it out as the belt on it is pretty chewed up. SKippy

they work good for what they are, naturally with such a small motor they will bog down kind of easy and it is a little too fast but other than that i dont have any complaints

I started out with a Delta 1" x 30" and still use it some.  Like has already been mentioned, it is underpowered and really fast.  That said, it was a great machine to learn on.  I still use it to do a very slight convex grind on some small knives, after I do flat grind on them.

As to belts, I bought some zirconia belts once, and they worked good, but I found that the cheap AO belts were a far better value.
