Anyone made a quiver from a black bear hide? I have a hide rug that I would love to make a quiver with, but would love to see some styles and finished products if anyone can share

I have a bear hide I have been putting in the mouth of the back quivers I build and I don't think by themselves they would make a very good quiver. If I were to build one I would find a piece of 3/4 or maybe 5/6 oz. leather and wrap the bear hide around it and secure it with Barge cement and a few stitches of sinew. A split would work great as the base quiver since it is not smooth and the Barge really sticks to it.

What a beautiful example of artistic hands that we were able to be blessed with for too short of a time, I humbly post these pics that are kept in a special album of mine of a lady who touched many hearts on Tradgang and who is sorely missed by many who loved her.
She did alot for so many and am very thankful to be able to carry one of her creations.

Good job Shell. As soon as I saw the title of the thread, Barb's quivers came to mind. I never knew the lady, but her work was pure art.

For my experience with bear, I have made several with a cuff (link below) and have a few in progress including one each for Guru and his son Cade with bear trim (who has been waiting so patiently on me)
bear hide is very thick and would suggest if you plan on making it full hair on, after tanning, hit it on a belt sander to skive it down thinner to get it more supple and then attatch it to the liner like Barry said or you can use it without a liner at full thickness, just add a liner in the bottom for your broadheads. It should'nt be that heavy if you make it either way but can be hot in the humid weather unless you add a piece of smooth or suede leather to the part that lies against your back.
Some commercial tanners will skive the hides for you but may charge more for that service if wanting to use for garment purposes.

Here is on of several I made for my kids out of scraps left over from a shoulder mount of my first bear. Nothing in the class of Barb's work, but still kind of fun to take to 3-D shoots and on hunts......

I was in fact hunting black bears in Virginia at the time of the above photo - can you see the claw marks on the tree? It seemed like a good time to use this particular quiver, but it didn't bring the mojo I was hoping for.

Here are a couple of pictures of one of three quivers I made from a bear taken in 1992. The bear hide was glued and stitched onto a stiffer leather base for rigidity. I used one of the legs, with claws, glued and sewen to a strip of leather for the shoulder strap.
