I've got a buddy who works at in a plant that makes custom hydraulic cylinders.
This was to be one of the components in a "small" cylinder, but it was off-spec and was headed to the recycle bin! In fact, there were three of them!
They were manufactured by a spring company from a specific 5160 melt designed for industrial spring manufacture.
Anyway, they are 1 3'4" stock and were loaded in a pickup with a fork lift!
I can attest to what it takes just to stand one on end.
I can see some LARGE choppers coming from this stock!

or you could make one hell of a pogo stick, maybe you could make one and retrieve the astronauts lost tool bag!!
That is a serious supply of 5160. how many did you get? Be sure to show us the first knife you forge from that!

I got three and they have about 38 feet of steel.
I already have 2400 feet of 1 inch square, made back in 1984, but my wheels are really turnin' thinking about what can be made from this size stock.
This was all special mill spec steel, too. Should be nice and consistant.

Good grief, Karl! You have a lifetime supply of bowie and camp knife steel.
That is just unreal. Good for you.

wow now that is a proper spring :scared:
i wanna see the choppers taht come out of that

Please don't try & tell us that you didn't sit on it & have a bit of a 'boing' up & down...
No-one'll believe you! :D

Rob, I only weigh 170 lbs. - 77.1 kilos.
It didn't going "boing" at all!

I think you're ready to do that custom lift-kit for your pickup now. :)
Happy forging!

It goes inside a hydraulic cylinder.
