I was given this piece of antler and can not figure out what type critter if would have come off.I have all type deer moose elk bo raindeer just about everything. This stuff is almost like ivory. Its well aged from the sun and if anything should be very light weight. Its not completely soild and does have the smallest pours in the center. Its real heavy and dence. Also way to big to be deer antler more the size of elk or moose. Are some like sambar stag antlers almost solid or very near solid.thanks bd

No idea without seeing the whole thing but it looks good on a knife!
-
That was the only piece I had,I cut enough off the make the handle. It must be some sambar type stag critter rather then north arerican. One thing also its so hard it almost burned the blade up on my band saw when I cut it.When belt sanding it kind of fills the pours of the sand paper really quick.Thank you on the knife.bd

No problem. I have seen NA antler that seems to get more dense with less of a soft core as the animal get older...seems that way to me at least.
-
Looks like aged caribou to me in the photos.
Dan
-
I would say moose. That looks very dense and would be from the base near the burr.<><
-
I was thinking Caribou too......uh...also. :) Lin
-
I think it's a unicorn.
-
I had some time this AM and went through most of the antlers that were given to me.The stuff I was asking about.Must be from the dried out moose antler blade ??? Anyone ever use moose ?? and would moose antler not be very pourest antler ? real heavy and desce ? Thanks bd
-
Frank has used a good bit of moose I believe.
-
Doc moose is great handle maknig stuff. I have whitetail antler I would swap for solid moose anyday . :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: I would bet anything it is moose.><>

-

-
Thank you Frank,I was looking for something that was kind of heavy and solid and would balance he knife a bit and it sure seemed to work good for that.Christmas is coming to Franks house soon my friend.......bowdoc

Nope no luck on the bricks as yet. They were those red bricks rather then the yellowish firebrick the guy had for me.bd
-

-
There is a wood stove supply place right near me.I'am going to make a run up there this week and see is I could get a couple bricks off them. Will keep ya posted.bowdoc
-
both handles are made of moose antler.bowdoc (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/bowdocs/bk001.jpg)
-
Those look real nice!
-
From the texture on it, thats a moose that was killed in velvet or died in velvet. I have a couple whitetail antlers that were in velvet, it dries and gives it a rough look and feel, very similar to that.
The Kid
-
Kid you are correct one anler was a shed and the other came off a bull killed in the velvet. It leaves those little grooves in the antler.Looks kind of neat that way...bd
-
Bowdoc, Did you quit your day job...no more bows to refinish? Or have you become a Knife-aholic :bigsmyl: tippit
