I still need to learn alot about knives
and I read alot of the topics here to get it.
So here is the question,I seen a friends knife
he received from a Indian and there are no pin
holding the handle in place,the guy said he heated the antler in boiling water and then put the blade in a
pre drilled hole and the antler tighten around
the shaft as the antler cool and it seems to be
seated rather solid.Has anybody done this or was
he just yanking my chain.thank in advance for any
help

I've read of it being done that way. Never tried it myself.

havent done it myself but have seen it done. seems most folks use a pressure cooker, the porous part softens up, you jam the blade in and the antler forms a kind of glue and tightens back up.

would seem a little less than finished to me, done that way. Not heard of it, but that doesn't mean anythign either way.Ive led a very sheltered life up to now.

or not he never said,what is you definition of

I'm still a wondering if you can just boil it
or will the hot water mess with the antlers
durability, I was hoping for a few clues
might just try a see what happens,just not
sure how long or how hot??
It does look pretty clean without the brass pins

Billy,
you supplied no photos for us to view.
You said he put a hole in the antler, boiled it, stuck the blade into teh antler.
If that is what you have, a piece of bone with a blade sticking out of a hole in the end of it, then that is what I mean when I said "less than finished" looking.
If there is more to the knife than that, then I withdraw my remark.

I don't have a pic. but I'll try to tell you about
it. after antler is attached to the blade he uses
a dremel and he etches pics of wolves,elk,deer
on the handle I'm not sure if he puts any
kind of finish on it or not. He is hard to get
ahold of with the way he live but I'll try to
get a pic.
My main question is does anyone know the proper
technique on how to do this and all remarks are
more then welcome

comes the part of grate patience to give it a go.
I know it was only a matter of time til one of
