Title: This stuff is a bit hard....
Post by: d. ward on November 09, 2008, 04:54:00 AM
This is my new Que'bec bear skinner...hack saw blade I was working on.I heated it up to around I would guess 1,200-1,400 and allowed it to air cool. The blade got a bit softer as you could cut it with a good file afterwards. The back which was the teeth side of the hack saw blade is still so hard the file just slips over it.Did I do something wrong or is that welded edge just to hard.Haveing trouble shapeing the tip..Thanks bd (http://i264.photobucket.com/albums/ii175/bowdocsarchery/bdk001.jpg)

Doc heat it up and leave it cool SLOW! I heat my blades in my forge and seal it with bricks to keep as much heat in it as i can. Slow mean soft. BTW I will be coping that blade design LOL<><

Ah ha ya gotta be right, that has to be it.I could not control the heat along the blade.I was using a mapp gas torch. And then layed the blade on some bricks to cool. One side may have cooled a bit faster.Once again and as always thank you for the help.bd

Doc get yourself a KILN brick drill it out and use your mapp for heat. I used one for 1 year and worked great. propane works great also. Cost is very easy on the wallet.<><

Again I believe you are correct.I can not get good even heat on the full length of the blade with just the torch. If the tip of the torch was a larger rosebud type tip it may work better. But I think I better be looking for my bricks.I have 4 of them someone gave that goes into the bottom of our wood burning stove. Is that the same as you mentioned ???? Kiln bricks ? thanks again.bd

Doc, That is a way cool blade design.  I may have to have Frank just make me a knock off of that.
Franks does some great work.  Listen to his advice as I know you will.  Please show your finished pics..........
