I have a friend that has this old piano in a barn. Local kids got a hold of it with a piece of pipe and busted it all to pieces. He ask me if I wanted the ivory from it and the black key are some good looking wood any idea what it could be? has very tight straight running grain. The ivory is thin but could be usable? what do you guys think any body want a piece to play with? let me know

According to that song by Stevie Wonder & Paul McCartney it's "Ebony and Ivory" on keyboards.

For nine years I rebuilt grand pianos in Miami. I forget what year most of them quit using ivory, but it's been a while.
It doesn't take much to make a piano key face, and there is still quite a bit of pre-ban ivory,
but for the most part, after the mid-sixties, it was man made plastic that looks an awful lot like ivory!!
Might work for some inlays.

i think that if you scrape off shavings from ivory and burn it, it will smell of burnt hair.

Are the black keys ebony?

yes

Oh yeah those stinken plastic keys do stink.I myself did bid or I mean try to purchase some one time but they went a little higher then I was willing to pay(then).I should have punched in another 50.00 or so.No telling what the hi bidder bid. There was one cigar box full of ivory key tops and one full of ebony keys. The guy emailed me some real tight shots of the grain of the ivory. That stuff went for around 102.00 plus shipping as I recall.Maybe keep an eye open there too.The ivory makes just super beautiful bow tip overlays...bowdoc
