Title: Big knives and Bowies? Show me
Post by: Bobby Urban on September 08, 2008, 04:04:00 PM
I am working on a big bowie (See my other thread) and would like to see others to get ideas for a finger guard and blade design.  Show me some of the big knives you have built or collected.

Thanks

Excuse me while I pick up my jaw.  OK - I am not anywhere near that class of knife crafter but I do like the oval finger guards and that is what I thinkI will forge for mine as soon as I get back to the shop.  Awesome Blades guys - I have room to grow.

Wow, Ron, those are some excellent examples of early American Bowies. Would you mind telling us the maker?

Here is one I made that is inspired from the same general period. The originals were made by  Woodhead/Butcher. This is just an interpretation, not a replica. Lin

The knives were made by Jud Brennan a contemporary gun and knife maker. That's a very nice piece you made.

Here are some that I made a number of years ago. Most were either sold or given away at one time or another.

This one I made and gave to my Brother-in-law. The steel in this knife is 3/8" thick. A custom knife maker that helped me a lot when I first attempted to make a knife gave me the steel. It was a billet about 4'X 2"X 3/8".

These two I still have. The bottom one I made for myself. The blades on these are also 3/8" thick and made from the same billet as the other one.

Good grief! Those are nice!

Is that an Arkansas Tooothpick in the bunch? Lin

Thanks, Lin. Comming from such a master craftsman as yourself that is truly a compliment for a peon as myself.

Yes, it was an attempt at an Arkansas Toothpick, but it sort of more resembled a Medieval dagger. It was a time consuming blade to grind at least for me, but at the time I had to try it.

This is a close up of one of the ones in the group picture above. This knife is made from an ATS34 billet 3'X 2 1/2"X 1/4". Obviously I did not use the entire billet on the knife as I believe it was around 14" or i5" overall.

Rick Dumas made this knife from a John Lonewolf 3 bar damascus...he took 3 separate bars of damascus and welded them together, then had Wei Lonewolf scrimshaw the hawk onto an elk antler.

This knife is very light in the hand for being 15"

Here is the knife that this thread inspired.  I am by no means at the level you see above but it is my first forged big blade.  Blade was forged from a coil spring, guard is wrought and handle is a large piece of whitetail antler given to me be a friend.  Subsequently the friend got the whole knife with a sheath in return and actually had the opportunity to use it for a "Coup De Gras" on a buck his wife spined this season.  Thanks for all the help and inspiration.  By the way, I did clean it up a bit after these pics but the goal was a rustic "Mountain Man" type look.  Sheath has a pin for sliding it into your belt but I never got a pic of that.
