Title: More fun with Damascus & Ironwood!
Post by: robtattoo on August 16, 2008, 01:38:00 PM
After my last attempt with Ironwood & Damascus, which didn't turn out 100% I thought I ought to try again.

Toby Crocker (His Tobyness, hobby bladesmith & farrier extrordinaire   :notworthy:   ) supplied me with some stunning ladder damscus & another slab of Ironwood, he had kicking around. After a few PM'd conversations we figured out what had gone wrong with my last etch attempt & Toby gave me instructions for his mix (15N20 & 20C)

I received the billet yesterday morning & had it to this stage by last night....

This morning I set to with cutting & filing the guard, spacers and handle & tonight, I'm pleased to say, I finished off with the sheath! See, sometimes being impatient pays off!  :D

Finished specs are:-

OAL is 9-1/4"
Blade (tip to guard) 4-1/8" Flat ground with vine(ish) filework. 58RWC
Guard material is HT'd 01
Spacer is Cowhorn & black fibre
Pin is aluminium.

Here's the pics....

Once again, a huge, huge thank you goes to Toby for the materials & help along the way. I think I may have finally figured this 'mascus lark out!  :D

Rob, Forget the Iron Wood.  That is a spectacular grinding job on the damascus billet!!  Any handle would look good on that blade  :notworthy:    :notworthy:  Doc

That's pretty enough to make a grown man drool.
Beautiful work! Toby may be "his Tobyness" to you, but Rob, you've earned the title "His Tattooness" with this one.

Dam that a good looking knife! I'm blown away by some of the great knifes you guys build. I would love to be able to build one myself even close to that!
