with deer season over, I'd like to try bobcat hunting, what calls work, never tried calling predators?
rabbit distress, and mouse squeakers work the best for bobcats..'cats are very slow coming to the call so plan on sitting very still and quiet.
'Cats also tend to sneak up on you with you seeing them till the last second. If you can go with a buddy..the shooter should sit downwind and and slightly in front of the caller. As most predators will try to circle downwind.
Good luck...
Go to radio shack if you have one or an electronics store and get a mini amplifier. They take a 9v battery. Then get a hand held tape player and a speacker with a plug that you can plug into the tape player. Hook the amplifier to the tape player and then the speaker to the amplifier. You just made an electronic call. Get some tapes. I prefer wounded cotton tail, although lots of people like bird calls for bobcats. Youll like pred hunting, you never know what your going to call up. Take a look at varmint Als website, google varmint al, and hes got a lot of useful tips as well as more detailed instructions on building the call. Mouth calls work well but they require some movement to operate and take a little while to master, not long but.... Electronic calls allow you to just sit there and move your eyes. Decoys work well to, nothing elaborate, a stuffed animal works just as well. The ones that move are nice but just more batterys you have to pack around.
"Here kitty-kitty-kitty!"
:D :D :D
Woodpecker distress calls are effective as well but as Drew stated cats are VERY VERY weiry and scittish. They can come in to the edge of a clearing and sometimes sit for 30 mins just looking around at the sound location. A wrong move, wrong fart or anything will scare them away. But in the same sentence they are very nosey so if you think you have one around or see one just sitting there, a kitten in distress will work. Hope this works. Dave
Rob- hear in Nova Scotia the cats are not that stupid.
Woodpecker or bird calls work good and also rabbit, Iv,e had some come flying in fast, but most will take a long time, 1/2 hour or more sometimes.
JAGER,
I have a friend that uses the same set up but uses an MP3 player. Called in a BIG cougar a few nights ago. Cougars aren't legal after dark here in Oregon so he had to let it walk. He is also a trapper and has a live trap that has captured and released bobcat and one small female cougar from it.
