Well I thought I'd show my knife making shop...just part of my unheated garage. This time of year my propane heater makes it possible & rather nice to work out there. In warm weather I just open garage door & try to work out side as much as possible especially forging. Most of my benches come from our dump...excuse me Re-cycling Center! So nothing fancy except the KMG grinder. I used my drill press, bandsaw, & bench grinder plus the KMG the most.

Here's the KMG grinder with the attachments.
Platen for flat grinding.

10" wheel for hollow grinding
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Knife%20Shop/IMG_2451.jpg)
Small wheel for getting in just about any tight spot.
Interchangeable small wheels.
For small detail filing & finish work this little vice mounted on a para pedestal works great. It can rotate 360% without taking the knife out of the vise.

OK let's see your shops...Doc

How in the world do you guys keep your shops so clean? You guys are almost as bad as Dano. How do ya find anything?<>< BTW I gotta get me a ANVIL! Those things look so cool and I bet it beats the heck outta banging ona flat piece of steel that jumps everytime I smack it.LOL<><
-
Frank. Do you have a railyard nearby? If you do, go and beg yourself 18" of track. Sit it upside-down on a big block of timber & you've got an instant anvil! (for around 1% of the price of a real one!) If you need to use the horn-end for bending & pre-forming, just flip it over & use the top face.
My first anvil was just such a thing & it worked a treat. Only thing is, you need at least 18" to get th weight needed to stop it bouncing. I had mine sat in a piece of 4" channel, bolter to a tree stump, so I could easily flip it over. If I hadn't been given my big anvil, I'd still be using it now!
-
Dang , this makes me want to go to Home depot or Sears and have some tool time ...Im so jelious... :wavey: :wavey:
-
Jeff, these are pictures of my shop when I finished setting up. I do hope to do what you guys are doing one day and forge my own steel, that is a goal of mine. Nice shops boys!!!
Remember, its that clean because I had just finished putting it together, right now,its a mess..LOL

Thats just not right how you guys keep everything so clean. Do ya ever work in them shops?<><
-
It's kinda like your Mom making sure you got clean undies incase of ending up at the hospital...clean only for pictures :)
-
Ok now that makes sense. If I took a pic of my shop right now all you guys would flip out. Messy don't cover it by a longshot. Just ask Leroy.LOL<><

Here is my hidey hole. Trying to get it set up for woodworking, and is a work in progress yet. Having a place like this to hang out in makes winter weekends much better! I can always find something to do.

I added on to my house two years ago. The “Man Room” as it is now called, is 18 by 24 deep and has a single garage door in the front and a service door in the back which goes out to a 18 bt 12 roofed over patio. It also has a side door that joins it to the existing 2 car garage. The “Man Room” was initially intended ro be a deer processing and sausage making area as well as a 2nd kitchen for our house. I built the entire addition myself.
The “Man Room” features a natural gas furnace that heats both garages, an epoxy coated floor, A complete kitchen, A phone line, Cable TV and a hoist built into the ceiling for raising deer for butcher.
While I mainly use it for deer processing and sausage making with the help of my sons.

Right now, due to the CO the forge puts out I'm forgin' on the back of the patio.
The rest of the stuff is in my basement across from the washer/dryer.
My son's looking at building a smithy for me in the spring where I can put everything in the same place with doors & a roof vent big enough that I don't get killed by CO.
I'll try to get some pics tomorrow if I can the the #**%#!! camera workin'!

Continued........................
It is decorated in true “Man Room” fashion
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c239/212007154/bow2.jpg)
When the processing and sausage making is done for the year, the “Man Room” turns into the project room for finishing knives. The dirty part of knife making takes place in the other garage where all the big tools are.

or making hunting gear like trees stands

Or other projects.
It is also an indoor archery range in the winter

RGK, That "Man Room" seems to do it all. Nice job of building. I certainly liked your birch handle build-a-long...Great Idea.

-
Think them Guy's had the wife spruce up the shop for their pictures? :biglaugh:
-
I have posted this before. This is an older picture. I have a different band saw now.
Here is a newer view of the back of the shop. Mike droped by to learn a little bow making.
Todays picture that shows the way my shop stays most of the time. Just finished removing the bark and sapwood from a special short osage stave and working on my first gun build, a golden age flintlock.
-
I could look at other guy's shops all day, even messy ones :bigsmyl: some of us are just plain anal about a neat shop. Functional, that's what counts.
-
sticshooter , I am in Delafield. I see Whip is practically my neighbor too.
-
Jeff, knife handles are one thing I do want to learn to do. I have tried a few, but there is much to learn yet. Sure would love to put ome wood on one of your beautiful blades sometime!
Frank, I picked that blade up at an auction last summer. I think I had to give something like $30 for it? They had two - probably should have taken them both.
-
Dang RGK Delafield is not that far from me at all. out there by the smileing Barn. I live in Franklin. Whip $30.00 you should have snapped both of them. Great knife making stuff there.<><
-
Yep! I mile from the (used to be smiling) barn. Just south of I-94. Stop by for a sausage and jerky sample. I just made a 30 pound batch of teriyaki snack sticks using a kit from Cabela's A little to salty for my tastes. It would require an extra beer to wash them down. Just let me know Dano.
May be a bit Doc ;) I had reservations because of the cost but everytime I use it I think how great it is and don't think a thing about the $.
Can't believe nobody noticed that 5' sawblade in the back. I'd make somebody a heck of a deal on that but the shipping might really hammer ya ;)

The Canadian bacon is great served hot or cold on a sandwich. It is really easy to make (simple brine) and easy to smoke.

I was going through old posts and saw this so I thought I'd bring it back to see if anybody has added anything.
My shop is messy, always has been and always will be...it keeps the WITCH from being out there too much. It has a gravel floor so I don't have to sweep anything!!! But, I do know where most of my projects are and what stage they're in.
