Title: Smallest functional necker
Post by: Labs4me on January 23, 2008, 09:22:00 PM
TG knife crafters:

I believe I've stumbled upon a new addiction. I have to say that the knives posted on the TG site are remarkable. Each is unique. All are just super cool!

What I'm considering is, replacing my current "work day" pocket knife with a necker. But it would have to be small enough that I could wear it under my "office camo" without it looking too conspicuous. My question to the forum is, how small can a necker be and still be functional?

I guess what I loosely have in mind is something on the rustic side. Thin. Light. Very  Small. As a starting point, I can tell ya that for a necker, a knife in the 5" OAL catagory is going to be too large. As far as the sheath goes, I'd like for it to be made of leather. Nothing plastic, metal or beaded.

Any suggestions or food for thought would be appreciated. Pictures or leads appreciated too.

Monty,  A broad head neck knife just might be the ticket. I believe there is a thread started you could check out for ideas.  There is another thread that was started awhile back that pictures a very small neck knife that was being called the honeypot knife. It was indeed very small. I'm not sure but I think it was RU (screen name) that made the knife. Do a search in this forum. It should come up fairly qiuckly.

Loyd:

Yep! Something very similar to the knife in that link. Any idea what the particulars are for that knife?

Loyd, did you cut yourself with that little necker or are you gonna try telling us that's not your blood?    :biglaugh:

Labs, for what you want a folding knife really is the ticket.  Either a friction folder like Loyd posted or a primitive slip-joint.  You could get away with a slightly bigger blade on the slipjoint b/c you don't need the stick tang like you do on the friction folder.
Here's an exploded view of a primitive slipjoint that Jeff posted a few days ago:

I plan on making a few of these   :)

Instead of a regular tie with that "office camo" ya could wear a bolo tie....

Here's a couple Roughcountry and I collaborated on for the St Jude auction a couple years ago. Be a good 1st project for a beginner knife maker. The little blades are held in with small rare earth magnets, kinda snap in place when ya get em close.

That's been a couple years ago but I think your real close Rick, one is a bear claw the other a bear canine tooth. Robin did the knot work and tie portions, he's incredible at that kinda stuff. These were a cool project, we've done a few other like it, you aughta see the hat band on my cowboy hat.
