Title: Bow preferences
Post by: mmgrode on January 21, 2008, 01:02:00 PM
Hey Gang,
I thought since the political races are getting into swing it would be fitting to post a poll.   ;)   It would be interesting to see what kind of preferences we have as a "gang" overall as far as bow preferences goes.  Now, this poll is for the bows you most hunt with/your go-to bow.  Happy polling, Matt

I decline to participate on the grounds that I can not make up my mind
Started out the year with a recurve, but ended it with a longbow.  Might prefer something else again next month  ;)

I went with longbow, since there wasn't a box to check for "all of the above", lol. I'm just a bow junkie, be it my Appalachian longbow or the little osage selfbow by Steve Nuckels. As long as it's a stick and string, I'm there.

I like the J D Berry Renaissance longbow and a old Dan Berry Longbow I made back in 1997 when I was handcrafting bows.

I had to think a bit before deciding whether a longbow or hybrid.  If I had to narrow the herd down to one, I guess it would be the hybrid, so that is how I voted.  The answer might have been different had I looked at this tomorrow.         :archer:

Well, the results have been just about what I expected.  Recurve tops the list with hybrids and longbows about equal.  I wasn't expecting there to be zero selfbow guys.  Ferret must not be around  ;)

Find it, fell it, saw it, stave it, season it, strip it, shape it, string it, shoot it, eat!  :jumper:
What was the question again?  Oh yeah, selfbow

I like the feel of the grip, the smooth draw and release and consistancy of a recurve. The recurves of today also are often center cut and can shoot a wide range of spine weights.

Thunderstick MOAB, it will be hard to beat.  JMVHO  These bows have the best of both worlds.  I have heard them called "straight limbed recurves".

Post by: Rob DiStefano on January 23, 2008, 07:36:00 AM
"Longbow" and "hybrid" are kinda misleading as both are what most folks consider to be a "longbow" - where the string's loops only touch the limb nocks (as opposed to a recurve).

"Classic IFAA longbows", like the straight limbed Howard Hill longbow, have that classic "D" shape when braced.  Hybrid longbows show a smattering of limb tip reflex when braced.

To confuse matters more, there are "stealth hybrids" (such as the 21st Century Edge and Horne 62" Combo Hunter) that show lotsa reflex when unbraced and a classic "D" shape when braced - make no mistake, these are fast hybrid longbows!

Hmmm - if you add up both poll categories (longbow and hybrid), longbows are in the majority (so far!).

I believe that there are now 4 self bow votes. I'm sure there would be more but they are probably either making another one or out looking for more wood. It's as addictive as hunting...,almost.

What a question.  Some of us will have a short circuit trying to decide!      :help:

Let's see, right now I'm head over heals with a Black Widow PGA.  However my ol' reliable bow is a Bill Stewart MCTD.  But I do have a small army of longbows of several varities to choose from - and I have an enduring fasination with English longbows.

For now though it's a recurve.    ;)

68" Wes Wallace Royal longbow, just something about longbows, I can't put it down.

I do like the grip on my Wes Wallace Mentor though, have not found another recurve in fifteen years that fits my had like that bow. Quiet too!

Matt.. I can shoot my recurves a little better than my longbows, but I sooooo love shooting the longbow that I always grab that instead.  Sometimes perfection is seen in different ways thru different eyes..

i can see the visual differences between a longbow and a hybrid but for all intents and purposes is it worth making a difference?

I guess I would also need to hear the definition of the hybrid bow if anyone could please educate me on this.
Title: Re: Bow preferences
Post by: ChuckC on June 28, 2008, 10:09:00 PM
widow,  they are names to describe shapes... essentially.  You know what a recurve is.  You know what a classic Hill style( D shaped when strung)longbow looks like.

A hybrid is a name that has been bestowed on what seems to be a more modern blending that starts with a deflexed riser and reflexed limbs and that (now) classic sweeping limb shape that kinda sorta resembles a recurve bow with skinny limbs.

Still, in all,  I believe it is held that if the string touches the limbs after the nocks, it is a recurve and if not it is a longbow.

Title: Re: Bow preferences
Post by: WidowEater on June 28, 2008, 10:42:00 PM
so if im understanding this right, what most call a reflex/deflex longbow is actually a hybrid?
Title: Re: Bow preferences
Post by: Longbowz on June 29, 2008, 12:31:00 AM
A hybrid has a reflex/deflex limb and a more sculpted handle similiar to a recurve.  The Martin Viper is a good example.

The D-bow owes it's shape to the cross section of it's limbs, not the shape while strung.  A lot of bows like this in fact have a little setback that can be seen while unstrung.  Their limbs are thicker front to back then the typical reflex/deflex with a taper toward the belly side.  Howard Hill's bow are the classic example.
