Guys as some of you might have read my post about trying to relocate to PA. Well I'll be leaving on the 26th. That's saturday. I will arrive on sunday, and probably will not be online untill Monday. so continue to shoot and maybe Rod can do the initial post for me, and when I get online I will do the normal thing.
Alright week 3 is complete and we only dropped 10 people since week 2. Still good numbers. Had 46 people turn in scores with an average of 47....which is 1 points lower then week 2, and we had a high score of 58.
Guys, if you didn't sign up don't just post your target. There was a sign up that ran Nov. through middle of Dec. and another 2 weeks after that was a list of people to make sure I didn't miss anyone. When you just post your target for the hell of it you make it really hard to find and score the peoples targets who signed up. Not to mention me having to locate your name on the list..only to find out it's not there. If you want in wait till the next one. Sorry I have to be this way, but dang it that's the way it is
• Alright this is week 4 of a 5 week series. The rules below are the final rules, and if you need any clarification please PM me. If your question is something I left out of the rules I will modify them. I will post any modifications in bold.
• You may shoot your first target using 5 arrows. Post your target with your screen name (the one you signed up with) and your score WRITTEN ON THE TARGEt. All targets are to be posted by 12:00 Noon Sunday, Jan 27, 2008.
1. Any bow longbow or recurve – No Sights what so ever.
2. No arrow restrictions....carbon, wood, aluminum, cane....etc...are OK
3. A cut line gets rounded up
4. An "X" is a 12 everything else is as marked
5. Targets must be turned in by Sunday 12:00 PM (Noon)
6. You cannot shoot all 5 targets in one week and turn them in one at a time or all at one time
7. You may practice/warm up before shooting your target
8. If more then 5 arrow holes appear in your target your weeks target will be a zero, or you will be asked to reshoot that week.
9. Targets will be shot at a distance of 15 yards or 45 feet
10. Everyone will shoot this Target no exceptions
www.tradgang.com/docs/tgott.pdf (http://www.tradgang.com/docs/tgott.pdf)
11. WRITE YOUR SCREEN NAME AND SCORE SOMEWHERE ON THE TARGET. Other information such as bow and arrow combo is OK as long name and score are there as well....Make them readable.
12. No whining, bitching, moaning, groaning, or complaining.
13. You may use a visual aid on your target. Such as an orange dot covering the X. As long as it does not obscure the line for scoring.
• We will be using this target so that everyone can print it. It will print on regular paper(8.5X11).
www.tradgang.com/docs/tgott.pdf (http://www.tradgang.com/docs/tgott.pdf)
• Best you can get is a 60 (5 arrow * 12 points = 60)
• All times I refer too are in CST/CDST
OK fellas I promissed you a speical post in week 4. Here it is. I'd like to say I am not the one offering up these tips, but only a middle man. I'm not going to name the tipster, but he is a person who we could all learn a thing or two from. So read away!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Only two places on the bow should be touched; the bow grip and the string. Its really important to get those two as close to perfect as possible.
First lets work on grip, its handy to have some sort of reference so its easy to repeat the grip position from shot to shot. One way to accomplish consistent grip position is to add a reference line to you hand, when beginning the blank bale drills, I'll get to that later
Since we can't see a reference line, with our hand coving the grip a piece of serving thread taped down the length of the grip (preferably where the bowstring intersects the grip) allows us to feel a solid reference.
OK now we have a means to repeat the exact same grip position. Its now time to find our perfect hand position by shooting the blank bale with attention to the bows reaction to release only. what we're looking for here is what hand position does the best job of allowing the bow to jump straight forward at release. The bow only has to move forward until the arrow clears the bow, which, according to arrow speed, isn't much, then what the bow does makes no difference. Try a few shots checking bow reaction, then using your reference lines and altering hand position a little and shoot several arrows. At some position, you will begin to feel the bow jump forward at release. That's what we're looking for! Also this would be a good time to test how little finger pressure it takes to keep the bow from falling to the ground. The index finger held loosely around the front of the bow is all it takes and negates bow hand torque.
Gripping the bow tightly or grabbing the bow during release will toque the bow showing sporadic arrow flight, flyers...etc.....a good trick to use would be to imagine you are holding a cup of hot coffee. If you squeeze the cup you will get burned. On the other hand you will show the same sporadic arrow flight if you force your hand open, extending the fingers forcefully. Your goal here is to have a loose relaxed grip on the bow with only enough support to keep the bow from recoiling out of your hand.
Just a quick THANKS to Jef for doing all this. Also thank you to the mystery guest for sharing tips, alot of this may seem elementary to some, but as a new guy I'm lovin it. Keep the tips comin!!!! Joe
Looks like I will start it out this week. Made a new string for the breed this morning. Shot it in for about 50 arrows, and finally shot a 60.

Hey, I even left the x in tact :)
dang...what a way to start out the week!!!
I shot a group like that this morning. Then the alarm went off and I woke up. :knothead:
Awesome Shooting X2 !!! :notworthy: :notworthy:
David
Great shooting X2 !
Sure thing Jeff, I'll start the "week 5 kickoff post for you, next Sunday
awesome shooting there X2
Respecting the X from the X2 man! Now that is skill! lol Nice shooting!
Thanks Jeff for the info. on striving for a more consistant grip. That makes sense now that I think back on times when I was shooting really well. It's funny how you soon forget what works and fall into bad habits. Time to go put it to use! David
i missed the first few weeks of the tourney can i start up now or am i out of luck. i signed up on the original thread
Talk about putting the pressure on.....great shooting X2 :notworthy:

VinnieB, your name is on the list so yeah shoot it up
I wondered what happened to my target after I shot it. How did X2 get it?
ttt for KS.
Here is my week 4. Last chance to shoot before packing up the bows. Shot with a SA III 43@26

Where's the pic, Jeff? Did X2 steal yours too?
OOPS, it was just very slow loading. I have super fast connection too. My bad
Unfortunatly I am not at the level X2 and Rod are yet. A couple more years and maybe some glasses I will be there...oh yeah I would never turn down some luck as well.
Here is my score for this week.

nice shootin x2
Jeff - thanks for posting the tipsters tips! I've been shooting trad about 8 mos. and am more frustrated than I should be with my inconsistency. But I just keep shooting cause I love it. I've watched some of the shooting videos and read some books but never shot at a blank bale and always held the bow, albeit gently, with my whole hand and low wrist. I tried the blank bale with the whole hand, then a 1 finger grip and 2 finger grip. The 2 finger seems to be the one for me. I shot several arrows that were touching. Haven't telescoped any yet... With the fresh target, I shot 2 tens, then was so excited I started thinking too much and ended up with 47 - an improvement for me! THANKS FOR THE TIPS!!

Chisler, I just looked at your scores from previous weeks. your scores overall have improved., so you are getting better. Don't sweat anything yet. Start sweating when you have been shooting for 25 years and your still not satisfied or comfotable with your acuracy, but are not getting any better.
Keep this line moving up
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v365/ks_stickbow/chislergraph.jpg)
I always seem to have one squirrelly one. If I could just hold them in the black I would be happy. If I could consistently put my shots in the #10 circle I would be thrilled.
I was practicing the other night and within three sets I shot three Robin Hoods. There was one Robin Hood during each set. The positive side is they where all in the #10 circle. I'm okay with not doing that any more, it gets a little expensive.

Using all the tips on here, and slowing down and think about what i'm doing seems to work!

I'm just curious how many people on here do not usualy shoot paper, but are now because of this tourney. And how many see a bennifit to shooting paper. Along with how many will continue to shoot paper after this is over with?
Yes I have been shooting paper circular targets, prairie dog targets, squirrel targets and deer targets. I usually back the paper targets up with cardboard to make them last longer.
I usually just shoot at a target with no paper bullseye on it. But now I see myself concentrating more on that little, tiny, itty bitty...you get the point.... X! It has been helpful. No great big change in my shooting. But I feel like I am moving closer to establishing some consistant shooting habits.

I don't shoot paper ordinarily. I thought this was a great way to focus on form and concentration, so I jumped at the chance.
Then in the second week . . . the dreaded syndrome-that-must-not-be-named started whispering ever so faintly in my ear, for the first time ever. I tore down the paper and went back to shooting at haphazard distances and haphazard angles as I usually do. Felt better about myself after a few rounds of that. Went back to the paper for week three and stared the beast down.
I think I need to alternate between my usual regime and the paper at fixed distance regime to keep the beast at bay. Whether I continue to do the latter after week five is an open question right now. YMMV.
Better this week:

Here's my score for this week. Better than last weeks. I guess putting that spot of tape in the center helped!

Down from last week but oh well. the bottom 10 looks like two holes but when it hit the bag it went up making it look like two holes.
Score 49. Hoping to crack 50 next week. (http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z107/HATCHCHASER/100_0537.jpg)
Well..same score as last week. 48 The first three were good and then the two flyers. My concentration shooting paper outside really suffers and I'm not sure why. Beleive it or not I shoot on a indoor league and my concentration is much better. oh well.

Somebody remind me why we are doing this again? I'll do mine Sunday morning after I thaw out from Saturdays' final hunt.
No kidding Killy. This guy makes me sick. Nice shoot'n Rod.
Killy...not, if I have to stay inside the X ring ! :D
Thanks
Rod, It's a real pleasure to observe your expertise. Thanks for participating
Well this is certainly good for me....keeping me honest about getting out and shooting - not sure if its helping. I just can't seem to get that one arrow to this listen to my mental coaching!!!!

Always gotta have the one klunker arrow. One thing this tourney has shown me is how much more practice I realy need. Seeing all this great shooting gives me something to strive for. Well, I'm off to Kzoo. Have a great week!

been sick all week, had a hard time staying focused, but I'll take it.
At least I'm consistent. Found out something that surprised me today when I checked the draw weight of my home made longbow. I guessed 48 to 50# @ 28" and it came in at 60# @ 28 & 58 @ my 27" draw. Now I know why the arrows kept showing weak spine.

You been busy up there with all the winter weather?
Hope you guys get to shoot and post this week.
Shot my last target today. Looks like 42 is the barrier on paper.
The 47 seems to have been a fluke.
Missed last week because of computer problems. This week's target.

Well, the score this week is 12, 10, 10, 10, and 9 for a total of 51. I've been fussing with Photobucket for over an hour and still no picture available. Jeff, I'll e-mail it to you while I play around trying to get it on here.
Last Minute, no time to practice this week and it shows.

I switched to a new bow and a few more pounds this week. I also switched to split finger from 3 under. Martin Savannah 55# @ 28. I practiced for 15 minutes then shot this. It sure shoots nice just the target kept moving on me. I need to get used to the weight.

Hey snag your target isn't showing
finally!
Sorry folks, Tried a last day hunt yesterday and was feeling under the weather the whole time, and most of today, and did not get to shoot this week because of work. I'll post a target next week, just give me a zero for this one. Sorry.
SNAG
Are you sure you got the photo uploaded to photobucket? I don't see it on your page. Maybe try again?
Sorry guy's, I know how Raineman feels. Been under the weather for several days and didn't even feel like shooting ( thats bad ) I'll take my 0 for the week and be back next week for sure.
Ks_stickbow, Thanks again for starting this, its been alot of fun!

you fellas are some shooting machines...I do feel sorry for those that have a hard time getting in 5 shots in a week. I am not sure how I would survive daily tribulations with having archery as an escape. However I do understand most of you have children and wives (wifes) that come first....you single guys that can't get 5 shots in a week need councling. :) ...Either way, check out the two 60's we had this week. Good shooting X2 and Rod...X2 your gonna have change your tittle to X5 soon!!!

Wish I could've got mine in, couldn't squeeze it in this morning. Going to have to try and do it during the week. Great shooting Rod and X2.
Sitting here looking at the target that I haven't been able to upload yet, and lo and behold, I shot a 12, 10, 10, 10, and EIGHT, not nine. Don't know if it was wishful thinking or what, but my score is 50, not 51. Now poor Jeff if going to have to do all his calculations over!!!! Well, maybe not.
I got you taken care of Dave. No sweat.
