Title: HELP -I guess I'm ignorant about carbons
Post by: Jack Whitmire Jr on January 20, 2008, 07:07:00 AM
I know this has been beat to death , but it's winter time ( time for serious equipment modification ) and I need help .I have several questions so bare with me .

1) Bare shaft testing - My arrows will not always fly straight bare shafting -BUT the points hit the same as fletched shafts. So are they tuned? Paper tuning with fletching show they are tuned ???

2) When bare shafting and arrow flight are considered I always come in way weaker than is recommended by everyone . Example I shoot a center cut riser 54#@ 28" drawn a full 28 " and I'm shooting a 29.5" carbon express heritage 90 that weighs 485 grains with my 175 grain field tips ( the same as my broadhead plus adapter ). Anyhow is something wrong with me or am I doing something wrong ? When I shot aluminums I shot 2016's out of this same bow .

3) Are the 485 grain shafts heavy enough for deer and hogs out of this setup ( yeah I know I have read ALL the threads on arrow weight )?

4) This bow setup with these arrows is dead quite does that also indicate everything is tuned .

5) I don't want to fool with weight tubes If I don't need to, but are they available for these skinny shafts?

6) Is being able to shoot weaker spined arrows a sign of bad form/Bad release ?

Thanks Jack

Jack... here's my take on your questions.

1. Yep!

2. Use whatever works for you and forget charts and what "everybody" else uses.

3. 485 will do just fine

4. Quiet is one of the indicators of a properly tuned set up.

5. I know nothing about the weight tube thing.

6. Refer to question #2.

Jack, I am not a carbon guru. I struggled with them for a long time and kept at it to take advantage of the durability.

This is what I found.

My bare shafts fly to the same spot as fletched shafts. The do not always fly straight.

I found weight tubes to be a real pain.

I found my spine range to be opposite of almost everybody else. I shoot carbons that should be way overspined, and I too wondered if it was a sign of bad form, poor release, ect.

I will add, that after bare shaft tuning, I always shoot through paper. I get perfect holes through paper after about four yards. My bow is very quiet also.

When I finally shot through paper to confirm my arrows were flying straight, I quit worrying about the fact that my set-up is different than what it "should" be.
