were can I find how to make a Z splice jig?
If your not doing a bunch of splices, it's just as easy to do them free hand. We do 20 or so a week and do them all free hand.
Here is a link to a build along we did a couple years back.

Thanks Mike
I use this method but make a Z splice instead of a fishtail.

This is one I made a few years ago.

I have a jig, but you either need an adjustable jig, or slats that are always the same width. I do all mine freehand like Mike and Jason do. Take it slow and it'll come out fine.
p.s. Urac will take care of any tiny gaps.

I guess the pics speak for them self. When you use this jig always push it to the same side when sawing. Bue--.
Thank you all. I`ll get er done now.
Is there any advantage to a Z over a fish tail splice? Looks like a fish tail might give more bonding surface, but a Z looks much easier to put together. dino
I have spliced at least 60 billets with a Z splice, never had a failure.
Eric,
I don't doubt the strenght of the Z, but why would one use the Z over the fish tail splice? Whats the advantages or disadvantages??? dino
Z is easier/simpler than the fishtail to finesse to get a tight joint. Plenty strong with URAC for these applications.
