Used to bowfish back in my wheelie days...mostly for shad on the Delaware.

Once I get my new Turkey Creek, the Jeffery I'm shooting now will become a dedicated fishing bow.

Holy carp! Biggie, did you guys smoke all those? Smoked carp is some good eating!

I usually quit when I have all I feel like cleaning. That's one more thing I miss about farming. When I was a kid, I could just feed any excess to my hogs. Man, do they love carp!

Nice thread Ryan! I've got a good buddy who smokes the carp he shoots after soaking in a brine, then cans the smoked fish.  Darn good actually! No kidding!  In fact I just ate some the other day.  Kind of leaves a funky smell on your fingers, but is really tasty!

Smoked carp is every bit as good as smoked salmon. In fact, it also cans well and tastes almost identical to canned salmon. Other than being boney, carp are fine for eating. My mom used to pressure cook them with the bones in. They got soft, just like salmon bones. She made carp patties out of them. They weren't as pink, otherwise I couldn't tell them from salmon. Of course, we didn't have much money, so being picky meant going hungry.   ;)

Naw....we eat catfish. Carp get turned under in the food plots.
This load was from the Traditional Bowhunters of Ga. shoot. One night on West Point lake. A catfood company sent a truck for these. Front and center is Joebuck.

all this talk of eating carp brings the subject of fried gar to mind...yes gar in my thought is tastier than catfish if one takes the time to learn to clean them which is easy yet kinda a pain as tools needed are a good knife, some tin snips or shears and a fillet knife.  to start punch a hole in the hide behind the head and then start cutting with your snips or shears back to the dorsal fin, once the first cut is made, make downward cuts at the gills and also at the dorsal fin on each side.  after the cuts are made, skin the hide back and take the fillet knife and peel the backstraps away from the spine, when cleaned right you will have 2 thick bonless fillets of gar when breaded and fried are hard to beat.  a couple other notes, gar eggs are poisenous so be sure to remove all eggs from the meat, and only rinse the fillets and dry before freezing as soaking them will turn them to mush

Bowhuntingfool, Jason's correct its a spoonbill catfish.  The eggs from this wary creature is what we call caviar.  We've cleaned and ate quit a few of them.  They have very tasty white meat when dunked in batter and laid in a hot basket of grease.  Another interesting fact is their spine. It's not bone its cartilage.  When cleaning one you can score around the tail and pull it right out.  Looks like a giant trick worm.

I shot a few last year with a 45# recurve and had trouble getting good penetration most of my arrows pulled out, it didnt even go infar enough for the barbs of the arrow to grab the fish.
any ideas on that. The only thing I thought was I was short drawing the bow.

I would suggest Power Pro line. It is kinda like spider wire. Really strong stuff. You might wanna get some with color so you dont think that you lost an arrow when your line hits the water. Oh yeah and if you like all your fingers dont grab the line when a fish is on.

Herkimerhunter,

The paddlefish is protected in many waters, like here in Ohio.  But I do know that out in Montana, where the world record comes from, you can shoot them with a bow.  Last I heard you got a tag for one like a deer tag.  Kentucky and Indiana allow you to shoot them, too I think.

Where I am from in Missouri you can't shoot them but spoonbill snagging is a deep-seated tradition and a hell of a lot of fun once you hook one of them.  Just be careful because in Missouri you aren't allowed to posess the eggs at all.  They must be discarded when you clean the fish.  Back in the 70s and 80s guys were netting them just for the eggs as they make very desireable caviar.  So the state passed the law that you can't posess the eggs at all, even if the fish was caught legally...which is too bad because those eggs make some of the best catfish bait there is.  But it's not worth the hundreds of dollars in fines if you get caught with them.

They are truly marvels.  My best is 71 lbs and I have been in the boat when a 96 pounder was taken.

Herkimerhunter, they are in our rivers here in KY. You can shoot two per man per day with just a fishing license required. They are very wary and you have to shoot quick.

I love to bow fish. But it looks like I do it a little different than you guys. I dawn my back quiver with about 2 dozen wood arrows & broadheads and wotk the back waters. After you stick him leave arrow in carp and stick in bottom of lake with your arrow sticking up and after you get tired go around and pick them up, put on stringer, take home and cook them. Don't forget to cut out mud streak. and score the meat so bones cook up. "Bear"
