Just got back from Trad camp with Leroy (goldenhawk) Jason, (whitebuffalo), Tim (TimFishell)and Drew (Drew) and myself (Jacobsladder)...We had a wonderful time. The weather was extremely warm for michigan october.. None of us shot a deer , but we had a couple extremly close encounters at eye level..We saw plenty of grouse, bear scat, rabbit, and enjoyed chasing porcupines at night. The coyotes and the screech owls kept us entertained around the campfire. The highlight of the trip was getting to hang out with trad buddies and shooting the herd of bows that were brought up... We had a treadway, a kanati, a couple vortexs, a couple shrews, rer littleriver, and a northernmist baraga, a morrison, and a dwyer and a timberghost.... There was only 5 guys in camp...Basically 3 bows per person.I'll let the other fellows chime in and add the pics and extra fun details of the trip... You gotta love the "tradgang" ..and we are all a part of this great family.

What an awsome camping trip,,LOL,,Well the weather was Hot!! but we made the best of it.
Shot some nice bows,,seen my first porky,,shaved some qwuills off of two,,one in the morning on a walk with Tim,,
Tim spotted him in the tree,,I had just the arrow for him tipped with a bear green head,,He was about 50 feet up and just sitting on a limb like a squirell, I picked a spot drew anchored and let it go,, Tim thought I hit him from his angle but I seen that arrow pass right over his back touching his fur,,SOOO CLOSE,, on my first night there I heard the funniest sound in the woods right before dark,,thought it was deer but it had more of a draging shuffle to it,,nope,,porky dead in the two track,,I let one go at him and hit the dirt right in front of him,, loaded another cause they ain't quick by any means,, let another one go and seen it disapear into his quills,,Darn now he got down a drop into a ceadar swamp and started to climb a tree. I figured I had bothered him enough and let him be.
I was not one of the fellas to see game on stand except squirells, chipmunks, porky's, but I still had a great time in trad camp,,I have more to come with pics and all,,J

Great looking country country fellars! I think the weather is supposed to break this week with us Hoosiers seeing highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. It should cool off real nice for you.
Mike

It sure was great country Mike! I want to Thank Steve, Jason, Tim, Drew for including me in their hunt. Fantastic Times were had! So far this year I have been fortunate enough to share campfires with some really good folks. You can bet I'll be headin for Michigan again before the archery season is out to try and tag out and spend some more time with new friends.
THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He also likes to keep my boots in his sleeping bag,,LOL,,
I got home sunday, watched the TG DVD,,thought I should go out hunting anyways,,I set up in one of my normal spots and an hour or so before dark I have this deer come troting into the acorn trees,, Noticed it was a good sized deer and thats it. about 15 mins. or so go buy and I notice the deer is comming down the trail I'm sitting on,,THEN I NOTICE HEAD GEAR!!,, I get ready for the shot,,he closes the distance to 14 yards but is facing me so I have no shot,, He whipped his head up looking to the north,, Then I hear the noise too,, It was a young kid riding a bicycle down the main two track right at perfect move time for the deer,,He whipped around and was gone into the thicket,,Man on the ground 14 yards away,, I guess you can't get them all,,Jason B.
-
Jason...its a good thing you didnt see what i did in your other chair....lol.

I was gonna add and still am....that footed youth arrow J. sent home with me...right after the Titebond sets up. My treestand steps fell on it on my way home and broke it. It's gonna look ok but J. won't be able to launch it anymore!
-

Here's a page out of my journal I wrote last night..about my hunt last friday night.
“A Season of Change”
As I sat on my stool in the unusually hot October afternoon sun in a natural blow down ground blind make up of Jack pine, my mind begin to wander off in reflection of this past year. I sat looking at the Northern Mist Baraga longbow lying across my lap, I studied every detail of the bow and how it had changed in the months since this spring when I received it. I noticed the leather on the arrow shelf that was perfect now shows the wear of hundreds of practice shots. The leather grip has marks where my hand rests and shows flecks of paint off my target from pulling arrows. A Sitka spruce “Firefly” arrow sits nocked on my string with new two blade broad head, ready for a new experience just like me.
I have changed over the course of this year, the end of the month will mark my first year as a father and a different trail I now walk. I sat thinking of how thankful I am for my beautiful healthy son, a great wife and family, a new group of friends made, and to a gentleman named “Pops” who did me a favor and held a special longbow as I fought to save up the money to buy it. The smells, sights and sounds of the woods made me feel right at home and thankful to be alive.
I absorbed the various colors of autumn, with the sounds of acorns falling around me as a welcome breeze blew against my face and rattled the oak leaves. Suddenly a squirrel erupted in a noisy chatter I knew meant something was trespassing within his sight. Just as my eyes searched for the culprit, I caught a movement and froze looking down a natural shooting lane. A mature Doe gracefully stepped in front of me as my heart started pounding out of my chest in my throat and ears, as I admired her beautiful silky brown coat as I picked a small spot just behind her front shoulder where I wanted to place an arrow. She took another step as I calmed my nerves a touch mentally, gripping my bow and putting tension on the string I slowly started to raise my bow up for a less than 10 yard shot. My longbow had barely moved, as I heard a loud blow and a stomp from off beyond my vision. I froze smiling to myself as I laughed inside from my error. I just made the mistake of being busted by a trailing deer I hadn’t seen or looked for in the excitement of the moment. The doe in front of me whipped her head towards me and locked on to me as she knew something wasn’t quite the same from a moment ago when she walked in. She blew and stomped, trying to force me to make another mistake, then bound a few leaps off into the thick brush to the left of me out of my shooting range. I shifted my glance to the deer that’d caught me, another doe just outside of my shooting lane slowly moved away from me keeping just enough cover to prevent me from getting a clean shot. The two ladies pranced around my spot cautiously letting me enjoy seeing them up close as they moved through the woods and slowly disappearing from my sight.
I tried to relax as I went over what had just taken place. Had I been in a tree stand with my compound, I would have easily seen both deer and shot once one had got to 30 yards. I would have never gotten as intimately close at eye level as I had just been. I just sat there smiling thankful God gave me the chance to see the two beautiful whitetails. As the gorgeous crimson and orange sunset faded into darkness I sat excited to share my story with a great group of friends at camp and to listen to their stories of the nights events. As I grabbed my longbow, and wood arrows I knew the changes that had taken place in me are for the best. I was thankful for a memorable hunt and just as the seasons have changed, so have I.

Leota- wow! My family homsteaded up there- there is a road named after my family in Springdale Township. Oh, how I miss it.

-
Drew.....Man that really puts a person in the blind with ya Bud. What a weekend!

Jason and guys,
sounds like a great time was had. Sorry I was unable to make it up this year. Son had football Saturday, finished up around 3 then headed over to my brothers for a get together with a group of friends. Shooting bows, shooting skeet, frying turkeys, etc... Sunday bloomed just as hot, and I took my 13 year old daughter out to sight in her new Model 70 .243 I picked up Friday night. She says she wants to hunt with me, so I couldn't turn down the opportunity to bring her into the hunting community. If we could get the timing right- I could bring the motorhome h up next year. She may be old, but she is in good shape, sleeps 6 comfortably, and has AIR CONDITIONING!!!
Jason, watch for my truck in Stanton and stop by when you can.
Thanks
Dave
-
Sounds like a fun trip. I haven't hunted that area in years.
How did you guys get to Leota? I used to live on the corner
of Bailey Drive and old 27. It was some good hunting back then. Early to mid 60's.
Jerry
-
sounds like you guys had a great time out there guys wish we could have gone with ya...
rob
-
Will do Dave,,
-
Drew...thanks for sharing the journal entry..very special!
-
Great pics and stories guys.Sounds like a good time was had by all.Sorry to have missed out on that.Maybe next time.
-
Jerry...we took 61 west out of harrison, turned right on old state rd...headed north to where old state rd and muskegon rd meet at the leota party store..then we took a left and a quick right on pigeon drive...this takes you back to the jonesville bridge area...we hunted roughly 2 miles north of there along the muskegon....pretty country, mix of oaks, pines in the higher areas and lots of cedar and firs in the lower swamps.... plenty of deer and some bear sign...we thought the coyotes were gonna carry us away.. they were howling all night...
-
jason...sent you a cool video on your email..check it!
-
Steve I'll be calling you later.
-
awesome pics..Yeah thats a few bows in that tent!!!
-
Sorry I havent posted much today been kind of busy. Drew, that is a great journal entry. I dont think there could have been a better group of guys to share a camp with. Steve, thanks again for the arm guard!! It is hanging in Nicholas' room right now and it looks great. Deer or no deer I dont think it could have been more successful!! I am already looking forward to next year and the new camp site.
-
ttt
-
Tim, can you send me the details of your Shrew Samurai, and the Morrison?
I'll get my pics up soon of the trip.
Jason, I forgot to thank you for the gift you gave me too. I got it cleaned up and ready to be dyed and waxed. It's going get me a few beaver this year i can feel it! Let me know if your mom's lake needs some 'Rat control.
-
Drew I sent you a PM
-
Tim....some day Nicholas will be wearing that armguard in the 2020 buckjam trad camp!!!!
-
Steve, you know he will be there. Man I am really looking forward to next year. It is going to be great and I think we are going to need a bigger bow tent since Drew is looking at the Morrison and the Shrew!!
-
Well one I learned at camp is that everyone should have a "back up" long bow, and I can't be too "trad" without having at least one recurve, right?
:knothead:
But if I get anywhere near what Leroy has had, I'm going to need some help and a good divorce lawyer.
:jumper:
-
I hear you on that Drew.
-
So I've had a few bows! Geez!  :help: :help: :banghead:
-
A few? First sign is denial...
I ordered the Chad's CD today!
Now Ron LaClair tempts me to buy a Shrew by putting his personal bow up for sale.. :help:
-
Don't wait too long Drew or it'll be gone.
-
Any of you guys that took pics.....If you could please put them on a cd and send them to me I would really appreciate it.
-
You dont have to worry about Ron's personal bow Drew... He shoots with his arrows on the wrong side of the bow for us normal shooters!!
-
That'll help save Drew some money for now Tim.
-
:biglaugh: :biglaugh:
-
Good, I didn't even open the thread because I knew I'd probably have to sell a kidney or something to raise money..
Here's pic of the goodies I brought hom from camp, a dozen Hickory shafts, a knife with a Helle blade, and a collectible #4 Montgomery trap. I've got some work to do!
Here's another view of camp.
The target range, which we donated a few gifts to the hunting gods and left behind i think at least 3 arrows one of which was borrowed. :D
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v445/Drewsifer/September2007015.jpg)
When I got home on Sunday my son was excited to see me, I had to read him the most important part of the paper.
-
Great looking pics Drew. I hope we see a beaver in that trap this year!!
Sorry I didnt post man of the pics I took yet. We were without power last night so I couldnt even get on TradGang!! I was going through withdrawls!! I will try and get some pics up tonight.

-
Tim...isnt it tradgang law that Jason has to post pics of this new bow.....Lets see it Jason!!
-
That's right it is "Man Law" that if somebody gets a new bow they must post some pics!! So get to it Jason!!
-
You'd thought it would have been the first pic up...maybe it's missing in action in the bronco, or stuck to the roof with some PB "Jam". :goldtooth:
-
Really give it up already Jason!
-

-
OK I could not! and I mean Not! do this bow justice with my pics but I feel the preasure,,LOL,, here is my new bow,, I'm really still in shock of such a bow, I've told some fellas at work about it and they just look at me like I'm silly or lost. They just don't get it. told them about the boots in the sleeping bag and not even hardly a smile but I know when we talk about boots in a sleeping bag it would put a grin from ear to ear on anyone of us,,Like I have right now typin this.

Yep that's a pretty bow for sure! I have to start makin some arrows for the bunny hunt too. Starting with the Doug Firs Steve is gonna do for me. Since I got rid of all my wood arrow makin stuff.
What are the dates on that again?
-
Second weekend in febuary,,this will be the fourth anual trad gang bunny hunt,, Kinda nuts to think its gone that far already,, when deer season blows over Steve and I will iron out some details and let everyone know whats happening.
I'm not trying to toot my own horn here but when I put an open invite out on the powwow three years ago for the stanton state game are bunny hunt, I had no idea what it would do. I was so nervous that no one would even show. We had an ice storm of all things but 6 brave tradgang members still showed for it,, what a great time we had,, I had chilli and salami and crackers and all the fixins that warm your body up after trompin through the snow after bunnies,, check out this video from the first bunny hunt and the second bunny hunt,,

I really can't put it in words how I feel for my freinds I've met here on tradgang. I know its special, especially since my compound buddies have all but forgot about me,,they have moved away but not near as far you all. I see Tim and Steve drive and hour and half to shoot for the day,, It really inspires me when I see folks like that,,no matter the distance they make it feel like their neighbors in my home town. I really do miss my best school buddy Marco. He has moved to nashville, MI and doesn't call anymore, the usual would have been an opening day call like " what did ya see" or " get any shots today". I miss that but my Life has taken a new direction. I feel its a more??? clear direction,, I know what I want to do and I do it how I want to do it,, It's simple, strait forward, and is all up to me.
Sorry for such a long post but i felt I needed to say that for some reason,,
Steve, Tim, Leroy, Drew Thanks for the wonderfull time in leoa MI. That is a trip I've been waiting to do for ten years now and everyone of you made it a dream come true for me,,The bow and arrows were complete surprises, as was the hospitality at the camp fire, I'm going to enjoy filling my memory book up with you fellas for sure,,
God bless Jason Bobb
-
Jason...thank you for our friendship and thanks for the guitar around the fire..... im sorry nobody in camp can sing.....but just listening to you play was great... Drew, thank you for hooking me up with the initial turkey feathers, only if i knew it would be so easy to make another trad friend...Tim, thanks to you and your dad for coming to the bunny hunt..and thanks for giving me all the tips and advice over the past year... also congrats on your beautiful son... i know there will be a day when Drews son , jason son, and your boy will continue the leota buckjam tradition... Leroy, thanks again for all the advice and keeping me busy shipping stuff to illinois weekly... It has been a pleasure pming you and then meeting you in person at our camp... also thanks for donating such a special helle knife to the camp raffle.. that was very generous..I found it very interesting that your mojo present from me was lost while you where in canada.... because i happened across something in Leota..that i think was meant to match that beautiful vortex of yours...cant wait to finish it and again send something off to illinois...and yes i will need your address...lol...... thanks again guys for such a memorable camp.
-
Jason,
Shoot me a pm when the bunny hunt is in the works. I'm sure I'll be coaching girls travel b-ball in Feb, most games are on Saturdays. If the bunny hunt occurs on Sunday- count me in.
Haven't been in the woods but 2 times, too hot.
Planning on heading out tomorrow pm, and saturday morning before football.
Dave
-
Well said guys. It was a year ago now that I first found the TradGand family. I have always shot traditional archery going up with a father that shot recurves and longbows. I give all the credit to my dad for sparking the interest and keeping the flame alive. But I feel that that spark has turned into a roaring camp fire in the last year!! Tradgang has introduced me to such great friends and continues to grow my passion for the sport. I never realized how big traditional archery was or how close I lived to guys just like me before I found this wonderful site. All I can say is I wish I would have found it sooner. I hope I continue to find new friends and meet new people off this site that share that passion but there will always be a special place for those first few that I meet at the bunny hunt in Dansville. I only hope that I can someday return the hospitality and kindness that has been shown to me. Thanks guys for everything and thanks to Terry Green and Ron Distefeno and all the guys that have created and made this site great!!
-
Looks like an awesome, unforgettable time.Good for you guys.
-
Jason you did good with the pics, and I know once you get the bow dialed in I know you'll do it justice with your shooting!
Thanks you guys for helping me, and inspiring me to shoot better and learn more new things!
Can't wait for the bunny hunt..
Boots in the sleeping bag, still funny...everyone thinks I'm crazy when I tell them about the field of cottontails, and the porkie.
We might have to get together for another hunt sooner!
-
Definatly Drew. We will have to see what we can put together for just a weekend hunt or even a day hunt on a Saturday sometime soon!! You guys are always welcome to my neck of the woods if you can stand a screaming kid every now and then!!
-
yeah..maybe its time that we all raid tims camp...chase some of those deer in holland area....i hear they smell like tulips.
-
Steve those tulip deer are reserved for cops and city officals only!! But we have 144,000 acres of state land to run around on!!
-
lets plan a saturday or sunday.
-
Sounds good to me. I cant garantee that everybody will see deer but I can garatee that we will have a good time. Let me know what works for everybody and we can go from there.
-
I'm Game and I still have a Michigan tag.
-
Nov 3 and 4th are open for me...
-
the 3rd is the michigan game..i gotta work..i could make it the 4th..is this gonna be a one day deal or both saturday and sunday?.... If leroys coming it will have to be 2 dayer ..
-
Later in November would be better for me.
-
Leroy, later in November is our gun season and then you would need a gun license. The only weekends that wont work for me are this weekend, the weekend of October 27-28, and of course Thanksgiving weekend. I would be up for either a Saturday and Sunday or just a one day deal.
Let me check with the wife and see if she has plans for me that I dont know about. I am sure we will figure something out.
-
our archery season runs till nov 14th, then it's closed for gun season for 2 weeks. So you'd be looking the late season Dec 1 - Jan 1.
-
Looks like it'll have to be a late season December deal for me then. BRRRRRRRR!!!!
-
It's "usually" not too bad Leroy, sometimes even in the 50's.

Drew those years that it's in the 50's are bad years!! I like hunting with a nice blanket of snow in December!!
-
Maybe we can get together and do a hunt around here in the next few weeks and then in December we can raid somebody elses neck of the state. Around here can be rather crazy in December with lake effect snow fall. A few years ago I was hunting in waist deep snow in December!! The deer left body prints instead of tracks!! It was crazy!!
-
Wow! Be pretty easy tracking if you got a shot though.
-
Yeah the only problem was if you were sitting on the ground you couldnt see anything but a wall of snow!!
-
I can pretty much plan any weekend except the 28th,,thats my boys B-day,, :bigsmyl: but other than that I can do it,,I would like to get down to Tim's for sure,,J
-
Well why dont we shoot for either November 3-4 or November 10-11. We can do a Saturday and Sunday if you guys want or just a day it doesnt matter to me. We have room at the house for a few guys if we want to do a two day deal and even come Friday night if you want to. We can do another one in December if Leroy cant make it in November. Let me know what you guys think.

Eather one works for me I'll let the other fellas choose,,
Hey I want to wright a song for next year. I remember some things from my perspective but If you fellas would add your two cents that would be greatIt can be anything and I'll work on it and play and sing it for next deer camp..LOL,,J

I might be able to swing the Nov 10-11th hunt but won't know for sure until the 8th.
-
10th and 11th would work for me... sounds like major rut time..... jason...lets title the song... "A Season of Change"...after Drews journal entry.
-
I'll have traps strung out bigtime, so I won't be able to make a morning hunt up could be there by the afternoon to hunt.
-
Yeah I thought that to Steve. I didnt know if you guys would want to not hunt your home lands that weekend considering that is the last weekend before gun season.
